UK police arrest nine over brutal attack on teenage asylum seeker

REUTERS

LONDON (Reuters) - British police said on Monday they had arrested nine people after a "brutal" attack on a teenage asylum seeker involving a group up to 20 assailants in south London.

Detectives, who are treating the incident as a hate crime, said the 17-year-old Kurdish Iranian boy was left with serious head injuries after the attack shortly before midnight on Friday as he waited at a bus stop with two friends near a pub in Croydon.

"It is understood that the suspects asked the victim where he was from and when they established that he was an asylum seeker they chased him and launched a brutal attack," said Detective Inspector Gary Castle.

"He sustained serious head and facial injuries as a result of this attack, which included repeated blows to the head by a large group of attackers."

The teenager remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition which is not believed to be life-threatening, police said. Officers said they had made nine arrests with eight remaining in custody and have also released pictures of three more people they wish to identify.

"Whilst arrests have been made, we now know that a large number of people, approximately 20, were involved in the attack on the victim," Castle said.

In a tweet after the attack local lawmaker Gavin Barwell described those responsible as "scum" while London Mayor Sadiq Khan vowed the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

Its good to hear that the police have arrested the scum responsible and that the boy attacked has survived.

It reminds me of the Stephen Lawrence murder .  I lived in the area at the time and knew (personal experience following a burglary when the police officers regaled me with endless racist stories) that more than a few of the police were extremely racist.

Hopefully this attack shows that the police are less racist nowadays as they've quickly arrested the attackers.

Good work English Bobbies. I hope the whole of the miserable group are caught and the courts dish out suitably lengthy prison terms.

I wish the Thais could learn something from this. They normally have to wait for the wanted to turn themselves in.

Eleven cowardly thugs attacked this lone young man?!

Appalling, but at least the police are arresting them.

Entirely off-topic, but bring back the stocks so that they lose their 'street cred' as they're left the object of derision.

Well said RuamRudy! Whilst I applaud freedom of the press, incitement by inference in the extreme right wing press, should be dealt with. The victim in this horrendous mob attack is lucky to be alive, all due to false scaremongering and hatred by certain elements of the press and others. I hope that the young lad makes a full and speedy recovery and the perpetrators receive their just desserts through the independent judicial process! I also hope that his asylum application is expedited by the Home Office, assuming he still wants to stay in the UK. He left one country in fear of his life only to find himself again in a life threatening situation. No-one deserves that!

The results of which can be seen all over social media; even on TVF.

Had this vicious attack been reversed, a bunch of immigrant thugs attacking an innocent British citizen, certain members here would be all over this topic like a rash; yet they are noticeably absent when the hatred they participate in leads to incidents such as this.

What's sad is that there has been a rise in violence involving the young, particularly in inner cities and city / town centers for some time IME, which seems largely to be ignored or the symptoms are treated rather than the causes.

I found visiting our city center, a pleasant small city, on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening unpleasant after about 10.00 pm until the early hours. Certainly if you had an Asian wife.

Given that there has been tremendous stoking of anti migrant stories from certain politicians and sections of the press, one can only imagine that violence to get worse as the root causes are left untreated.

No; in her interview on LBC she tried to link the rise in hate crime to Brexit.

Not what I said at all.

I accept what you say, my apologies. Maybe I should have aimed that remark at those who tried to link this cowardly attack on Britex. Including some on this thread. She, Diana Abbott has so far refused to apologise for another bad remark, against those who do not agree with her political stance.

@MRTELLYOUSTRAIGHT,

There is so much spin in that video that I'm surprised someone with your user name fell for it.

Firstly, he is concentrating solely on one report in one source; which he doesn't name. One can only assume because reports from other sources shoot his hypothesis down in flames!

In addition, he attempts to blame the attack on other asylum seekers or black youths; simply because the report he uses as his source doesn't mention the ethnicity of the suspects. In fact, the pictures of those charged so far and those still being sought by police show the attackers to be a mixture of black and white, male and female.

He also claims the media moved the story to the inside pages, or even dropped it all together,  when the police released the identities of those arrested and still being sought which showed some of them to be black. Untrue; at least as far as media in the UK is concerned.

The poster of that video and Ms Abbott are both beneath contempt for their attempts to use this horrendous attack to further their own political agenda.
