Nth Korea renews royalist ties in Cambodia

A high-level North Korean diplomat has pledged to build on good relations with Cambodia and the country’s royalist Funcinpec Party. Ma Chol Su, who leads international affairs for the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, yesterday met Funcinpec Party president Prince Norodom Ranariddh at his house in Phnom Penh’s Chamkarmon district.
 

Warm relations between North Korea and Cambodia go back to the reign of Prince Ranariddh’s father King Sihanouk, who became good friends with its leader Kim Il-sung in 1965. North Korea built King Sihanouk a palace near Pyongyang in the 1970s, where he would spend several months of the year.
 

Funcinpec was formed when King Sihanouk was living there in exile. Yesterday’s meeting with Mr. Ma was intended to build on existing ties between the countries and pave the way for Prince Ranariddh’s proposed official visit to North Korea in July.
