Migrant workers returning home from Thailand for Khmer New Year have reported being charged several hundred baht in unofficial fees to cross the Daung International Checkpoint to Battambang province. A National Police report said between 500 and 700 migrant workers passed through the Daung crossing between Saturday and Wednesday, with many being asked to pay 300 to 500 baht ($8.50 to $15) in processing fees, as the congested checkpoint struggled to cope.

Sok Phal, the immigration director-general at the Interior Ministry, visited Daung checkpoint officials on the Cambodian side and told them not to demand fees from the workers. But officials claimed they knew nothing about the payments and blamed the Thai side, who also denied knowledge of the charges.

Daung checkpoint official Ngin Linazano said the allegations were false. “When our Khmer brothers and sisters come, we help them cross. Maybe the payment is applied to the cart-pullers, but for us on duty here, we haven’t taken any money and the Thai side is not demanding fees that I know of either,” he said.
