KORAT: -- The Korat land transport department has appealed to the North eastern truck drivers' association to request their members not to use roads throughout the Songkran period from the 11th to 17th of April.

The association has agreed to not run trucks on three major roads namely the Friendship Highway (Mitraphap), Route 304 Kabinburi to Nakorn Ratchasima and Route 24 Si Kiw to Ubon Ratchathani, reported Thai Rath.

Officials hope the move will ease traffic chaos and help to save lives by lowing the chance of road accidents.

The association has 900 members running a total of 10,000 trucks.

Well, perhaps this may actually help a bit. Good!

Putting lives and safety ahead of money for once. Wow! Nice to see.

Now all they need to do is spend the down time doing some maintenance to the vehicles, like fixing brakes.

There is no way known they are going to ban the under powered, over loaded, heavily polluting, 40 year old Isuzu sugar cane hauliers from the roads, within Isaan, at any time! They are a law unto them selves

Not sure if it's still the same but I remember in Germany every Sunday was no truck day. Made quite a difference to a nice day out in the car.

A lot of good that would do--brakes fixed by drunk mechanics...

But then the truckers will use smaller roads during that period making it even more dangerous. and the majority of accidents are not caused by trucks or traffic chaos, they are caused by pissed up motorcyclists driving too fast.

Sure a great idea. Maybe the world needs a no sex day to re-balance itself.

Absolutely no need to go that far.
