Bus firms told to freeze prices

Bus and transport companies have been told not to increase fares and to prioritize passenger safety by obeying traffic laws over Khmer New Year this weekend. Last year, 65 people were killed on the roads over Khmer New Year, while 214 people were seriously injured and 265 suffered minor injuries.
 

Touch Chan Kosal, a secretary of state at the Transport Ministry, warned that traffic accidents always rise over the festive season, particularly due to speeding and drunk driving. Speaking at a meeting with transport companies yesterday, the government official urged firms to make sure staff strictly adhere to traffic laws and avoid alcohol or substance abuse.
 

Mr. Chan Kosal also said companies should freeze prices at their normal rate, or give New Year discounts to benefit workers. He said: “They are private companies and we do not have laws that forbid them from changing their prices, because they have the right to run a competitive business.
