Poipet named as drugs hotspot

Featured Replies

Banteay Meanchey authorities yesterday said they’ve arrested more than 300 people for drug-related offenses since the start of 2017. More than 3.5 kilograms of drugs were seized in the raids which included methamphetamine, ice pills, heroin and marijuana.

“The latest figures show that most drug seizures take place at Poipet, where the Thai border to Cambodia is,” provincial deputy governor Oun Eartry said. He added that tackling drug issues proved to be a challenge in the province as it shared a 153 kilometer border with Thailand, making it a prime location for traffickers attempting to bring illegal substances into Cambodia.

“To handle the drug issue, we need to stand united in order to achieve our goal in completely eliminating drugs,” he added. In January, the government ordered authorities to launch a six-month anti-drug campaign, in a bid to protect the public from crime and prevent social problems caused by illegal drug use.
