Oil shortage expected in Koh Tao due to strong waves

Deputy Chief of the Tambon Koh Tao (เกาะเต่า) Local Administration, Kobchai Saowalak (กอบชัย เสาวลักษณ์) has expressed his concern over a possible oil shortage in the island as the local electricity generating authority had announced that oil reserves for the production of electricity in the area will be used up by December 23.

Oil transport boats cannot travel to the island due to strong waves in the Gulf of Thailand. The Koh Tao Local Administration has requested the Royal Thai Fleet 2nd Region to transport oil from Koh Samui to Koh Tao.

As for tourism in the island, Mr Kobchai said more than 3,000 foreign tourists staying at Koh Tao are not panicked about the strong waves.

Boats traveling to the island have slightly decreased and the overall sea transportation is considered normal.

Today in the morning, waves surrounding Koh Tao are 2-3 meters high.

Koh Tao uses large electrical generators for the electricity supply, and many places have their own electrical generators as well. Hence the need for fuel :o

Happens every year, luckily they haven't run out of food this time :D

I was on Koh Tao December 99 when the monsoon stopped the boats for over a week ... :D

As we we nearing Xmas day all that was left was rice and Beer Chang ... all the fresh poultry, vegetables, eggs and good beer had long since been consumed .... :o

However a couple of days before Xmas a big Thai navy boat rocked up with fresh food and drink supplies and took 400 stranded backpackers back to the mainland ... :bah:

Those of us left on Koh Tao feasted like we had never feasted before ... :bah: ... Happy Xmas ... :D
