PHUKET: A horrific accident on Thepkrasattri Rd southbound left a 3-year-old Phuket girl without a mother after she was crushed by a tour bus packed with Chinese tourists yesterday afternoon (April 21).

Lt Col Sunan Petchnoo of the Thalang Police was notified the accident, about 300m to the north of the locally called “Khao Lan Intersection” in Baan Lipon (see map below), at 5:45pm.

Srisoonthorn rescue workers arrived at the scene with Thalang Police to find traffic had been forced to a standstill due to the crash.

Under the right side of the vehicle lay a Honda Wave motorbike on which Sooksai Phudeethip, 38, and her 3-year-old daughter Sasiprapra had been riding on.

The toddler had somehow avoided the crushing impact of the bus and suffered only minor injuries.

Ms Sooksai, however, was run over and dragged some 30 meters under one of the rear tyres.

The bus driver was not at the scene when police arrived.

According to police, the bus was travelling at high speed at the time of the impact.

It will never end.

A good starting point for the new governor: drastic measures to get a grip on these hools.

They need to start publishing pictures of the drivers next to the dead, smashed and mangled bodies, if they are at fault.  If they are not going to enforce the laws, or have justice, let everyone see exactly who was responsible, and the result of their negligence.  I'm not condoning this in instances of a mistake, but a grievous neglect like speeding, drunk driving, texting, reckless driving...

The basic problem is that there is no separation on Thai roads between different types of traffic e.g. large vehicles  such as buses and trucks, and small vehicles like bicycles and motorcycles. This usually doesn't matter on small roads in towns ( if people keep to speed limits and drive according to conditions) but is a recipe for disaster on faster roads. Especially true combined with all the crossing of highways at unofficial junctions, U turns from a slow lane directly across or into a fast lane, and the general lack of training, care and accountability of Thai road users, where enforcement of rules is absent. The only rule that is enforced is the illogical one of banning fast high capacity motorcycles from toll roads e.g. Bangkok to Pattaya. Bad road engineering and careless drivers equals highest death toll in the world for motorcyclists.

Unfortunately he's too busy beautifying the island!

I remember a similar accident in Taiwan. The large vehicle didn't have guards installed under it so a motorcycle couldn't fit under it.

That's what's needed on all large Thai vehicles. Guards installed under it.
