PATTAYA: -- An "Uber" driver who picked up two Chinese tourists on Beach Road was hunted down after furious Pattaya taxi drivers called in the cops.

The Mitsubishi Pajero, being driven by Somchai Sribunreuang, was stopped in North Pattaya after it had fled the scene as angry local drivers tried to stop it leaving Soi 7, reported Siamchon News.

Suphachai Peungprpha of the local taxi drivers' association said the Pajero had been spotted picking up the two tourists and police were immediately informed leading to the arrest.

Uber driver Somchai said the tourists had contacted him on an app and as he was in the area he agreed to meet them and take them to Moo Ban Chang for 240 baht.

He was arrested and taken into the police station where he was fined 2,000 baht for illegal use of his vehicle according to articles of a 1979 law.

The tourists were informed why this was happening, said Siamchon News.

GOOD.......Uber is ILLEGAL Here...................

Well, if Uber is illegal here, then good to see police take action. Furthermore I would love to see enforcement of using the Taxi Meter of regular cabs.

I would like to see the police react as quickly and with as many numbers for the serious crimes that occurs here.

The police motto is "protect and serve". But who?

Themselves and their own interests mostly.

That would indeed a point for the police to do something about.

Urgently!

Several years of nothing. Were you joking?

I would use the official cabs several time a week. But it's no fun to negotiating a price where you know you will pay too much anyway...

Pattaya taxis are their own worse enemies. They won't use meter, very rude and they fear competition. And of course the police are in their payroll.

Uber driver Somchai

This is going to be a landmark issue - Somchai vs. Somchai. May the biggest brown envelope win.

He was arrested based on a law from 1979. I am impressed.

The Brazilian lady at the airport was allegedly raped the other day by a regular Thai taxi driver who, according to today's news, had two prior rape convictions prior to allegedly assaulting this latest woman.

And now, the police want to complain about and start arresting Uber drivers for picking up Chinese tourists?

How about instead enforcing the basic laws first so that convicted felons and rapists aren't running around driving government-licensed taxi cabs?

You can kill somebody, and be charged less

So the "Taxi-Meter" taxis that illegally do not use their meters are throwing their rattles out their prams.

Thainess in all its' glory.

Agreed, never seen a taxi in Pattaya use the meter, always try to con us.

Uber should not be banned at least with an Uber you know the price and they WILL pick you up and take you to your destination with fear of being kicked out.

Uber in pattaya is fantastic. Around town you mostly don't need it because of the baht buses and motorbikes. But I find it very handy if raining or carrying a lot of bags.

Or when the Airport bus drops you off late at night up on sukhumvit you don't have to be at the mercy of the stooge taxis waiting for you there.

Safe drivers that arn't insane or talking rubbish. Nice new clean cars. No chance of fare disputes and all quite cheap.

And if a woman, risk rape

Or if a woman, of being raped.

Quick to grab an Uber driver but can't make licenced taxis use their meters or prevent them from parking illegally or blocking traffic in front of central.. Did I mention them overcharging and cheating too ?.. Police can't prevent that either..

Central - as in slap bang next door to the police station.

We should call the police when the taxi says meter broken or doesn't work! See what happens?

Thailand 4.0 my ass.  More like Thailand 0.4.

the good general was going to talk to uber about coming in and cleaning up the taxi business. guess the talks did not get very far past what royalties uber were willing to pay.

And he wasn't just convicted of two prior rapes in general. He was convicted of two prior rapes of his prior taxi passengers!!!  And the taxi company still allowed the guy to be driving and apparently never submitted his info to the Depart of Land Transport for background checking.

Laughing and/or punching.

Themselves. :cheesy:

I watched as 6 taxis refused a fare from two ladies in Sukhumvit Soi 11 last week.  These parasites complain when other services threaten their business yet they are unwilling to change and the authorities are useless.

So, capitalism was at full swing and a competitor won the hearts of the consumers only to be shot down by incompetent taxi drivers who don't understand the concept of business competition.
