Can anyone tell the best option. I'm from Canada and I'm going to spend 3 months in Pattaya. I'm diabetic and I take :

METFORMIN 850 mg (GLUCOPHAGE)

NOVOGLYBURIDE 2.5mg (DIABETA)

MONOPRIL 10 mg

LIPITOR 20 mg

What is best, to bring my medication from Canada since I pay only 20 % of the cost at home ? Can I find these pills in the pharmacies with a prescription from my doctor.

Is it legal to bring with me all the medication I need for an extended stay ?

Thank you for informing me.

While your meds may wll be available with a prescription from a Thai Hospital and they are definitely cheaper here in Thailand, I can't imagine they would be more than 80% cheaper than in Canada, which they must be if you can get them for only 20% of their cost in Canada. If they are not generic, I am sure you would pay more in Thailand.

If the meds you bring with you are clearly marked as to what they are by the manufacturer and you have your prescriptions for the drugs with you, there should be no problem. Go through the "green line" and worry not. If the meds are repackaged by a pharmacy with a dispensing label, you are surely safe bringing them in.

Get it back home and bring it with you.

Cost wise shouldn,t be a consideration in this case.

If you do get it in Thailand you cannot guarantee the quality if it is a generic / cloned version.

As P.T.E. advises get it clearly marked and perhaps also get a supporting letter from your doctor.

As they are for personal medicinal purposes and the drugs are not a banned substance you should also be o.k. legally so don,t worry about it.

If you have enough to keep you going during your visit then there isn,t an additional worry about getting supplies either.

Make sure you store them under the advised conditions the Pharmacy recommend.

Thanks for the advice . I forgot to tell you that my insurance covers the remaining 80 % of my prescription. :o

If your doctor in Canada will prescribe enough of your medications to last for 3 months,

you need to get the drugs in Canada and take them with you.

If you rely on getting the medications after you get to Thailand you need to do some pre-planning.

1) send the list of medications and frequency of use to someone in Thailand and have them take the list to the local pharmacy and see if they have the medications.

2) have someone in Thailand find a doctor that would be willing to write the prescriptions.

3) quality of the medications is a concern in Thailand.

I am among other things a diabetic and my friend in Bangkok found out that even the simple meds I need are not available in Thailand.

A major setback for me is that I take a powerful narcotic (Opioid) pain medication that is 40 times stronger than morphine.

The narcotic is not available in Thailand.

It is against USA laws to dispense more than a 30 day supply of this narcotic at any time.

I take a 30 days supply with me and 14 days before I need a new prescription, I call the VA Hospital and tell them that I am still alive and they process a shipment to arrive at my home (in Texas.)

My daughter gets the medication and ships it to me in Thailand express mail.

The main key is the medication has to be in the original container that specifies the doctor who prescribed it and how to use it.

As the line crossed out is from my post i,ll expand on my observations. :o

If you are going to buy in Thailand just make sure the pharmacy is legit, registered and licenced.

Otherwise you may be getting something that is of inferior quality / copied and sold by unscrupulous, unqualified people.

There are lots of good pharmacies and also others not so good.

My own experience tells me to bring it from home ( U.K. ) and then i know what i am getting, what,s on the packet is kosher, along with relevant and trustworthy advice.

Of course you will find genuine medicines here and all i am saying is, just be aware that not all are as you would find them back home.

Personally if i find the need to get medicines in an emergency I use " Boots " in the bigger places.

Good luck, enjoy your stay and whatever you do, take care.

P.S.

If you ever use the clinics you,ll get so many tablets prescribed, it,s like getting a bag of sweets.

I get my Metformin 850 mg tablets here at 40 baht for 10 tablets, and my blood sugar has been fine, so they work. At 240 baht for a month's supply it's about the same as the copay I had in the US.

I don't know about the others, but I will suggest at least knowing the generic name for the Monopril (Fosinopril) and Lipitor (atorvastatin). New drugs still under patent are the hardest to find and most expensive. Neither my blood pressure nor cholesterol meds are yet available here, but my US doc said I can go another 6 months without them with no ill effects.

The legal technicality is that you are allowed to bring in a 30-day supply. I have never heard of anybody having an issue with bringing in a supply for 3 months.

Overall, I'd just bring them with you if you can get them easily at home.

my primary care doc at Bumrungrad, endocrinologist Dr. Poj, graduated from the U of Pennsylvania & is the best doc I have ever been treated by.

& his English is better than my Texan version of the language! :o

he is often OVERLY cautious .. labs on top of labs w/ referals to specialist on any unclear issue out of his field of speciality.

3 pages of labs on my last visit

a specialist can usually be seen the same day .. on my last visit the specialist ordered additional labs..

.. relatively cheap & 100% reassuring!

labs, 2 docs & 1 IM injection was under 9k Thb

meds from a soi pharmacy are questionable .. outside Vitamin V or skin cream I do not trust.

meds from Bumrungrad (or Ram Group or Bangkok Hospital) are as safe as meds back home.

IMHO!
