webfact
Transvestites arrested for ‘offering sex’ to tourists in Chiang Mai By The Nation CHIANG MAI: -- Police arrested six transvestites for allegedly propositioning tourists in Tha Phae Gate area in downtown Chiang Mai late on Monday night. Police checked the area after receiving complaints that many transvestites in revealing dresses were working as prostitutes in the area. Police located the transvestites just after midnight on Tuesday and the transvestites ran away when they were signalled that police were coming. Police nabbed six of the alleged sex workers, said Lieutenant Sathaporn Watthakorn, deputy crime suppression inspector at Muang Chiang Mai Police Station. He said the arrested transvestites were aged over 20. They were charged with trying to pressure people in a public place into buying a sex service, and thus had committed a shameful act in public. NancyL
Hubby walks for exercise nearly every morning around the Old City, usually around 4:30 - 6 am, just as the ladyboys are clocking out at Thapae Gate. He says he likes to see "the changing of the guard at Thapae Gate", i.e. when the ladyboys go off duty and the monks come on duty. I asked him if the ladyboys ever approach him and he said, naw, most know he's out walking for exercise. Sometimes, one is esp. hungry and does try to start a conversation. What do they say? I asked. Where do you go, I go with you. Would you like massage? I give you good massage. That sort of stuff. In other words, don't make eye contact and just keep walking. I pointed out that sounded tamer than a tuk-tuk driver trying to hustle a fare at the Night Bazaar and he had to agree. Who could possibly complain about that, except maybe for someone who actually stopped to talk with one of the ladies thinking they worked for TAT as welcome hostesses and tour guides. Although sometimes they do become aggressive and violent I was walking past them recently with a newbie in Thailand . He mentioned "those Women" and I informed him that they were LB's They must have over heard me and one threw a bottle at me, which caused an abrasion to my back . Another time, three of then surrounded a Chines guy on a motorbike , who seemed interested in their services , one even took her top off to display her inplants , after a few minutes the Chinese guy went to drive off alone They pushed him off his bike and proceded to beat him up I find them to be quite annoying , they shout out to you in a falsetto voice , if you ignore them , they continue to shout louder and louder and if you in anyway acknowledge them , just even saying "No thank you" , they often come running after you
geriatrickid
These poor souls are there because there is a demand for their services. Some are mentally ill, others are drug addicts, while others are so marginalized this is all they can do. Others are clueless troubled kids who fall prey to a manipulative pimp. Rounding them up, and abusing them or fining them just compounds the problem because they will have to service more clients to pay off their debts. What is needed is drug rehab, therapy, education, and some hard labour. The Johns should be arrested and given the bill for cleaning up the mess the Johns created. Most of them are there because they earn a lot of money and therefore want to be there . You need to stop analysing people and dictating to them what they should or shouldnt be doing There are there through choice and you have no right to tell them what to do

When I have seen them at Thapae Gate they seemed like like bottom of the barrel desperadoes. People who are genuinely interested in their services probably don't pay much. The most money they can earn would be from bullying a tourist customer, threatening to cause a scene or sympathy guilt when they lay on how desperate their lives are which is very true. elektrified
Most of these transvestites are drug addicts (yabaa/ice) and they come out at night like a cockroach infestation. I agree, they need drug rehab and a job. Sending them to jail for a week/month - whatever - won't do much. They will be back on the street again - if not here then in Phuket or some other city. I doubt they earn much money. I've never seen a vehicle stop to pick one up.
dunroaming
Well it is now over seven years since I moved from Chiang Mai (I lived there for ten years) although I do go back on business occasionally. Ever since I first moved there, there were the Loi Kroh Bars and girls calling us in and lady boys around Thapae Gate at midnight. Police would occasionally pull in the Kateoys and fine them 100baht or so and then they would get back to business. Cannot see how this can be news. I imagine money spent on LBs is money not spent in other shops; those shops would have a bone to pick with their competition for tourist dollars. Heck, even women of the night could complain about the competition for tourist dollars.

I imagine the LBs know they're not going to get any action from them and that they probably have less than 1000 baht in their wallets and know the location of the police station and some basic Thai language so they aren't worth trying to rob.
