The Armed Forces Reserve Act will only be used to prepare for military service and only 20 per cent of the reserve unit will be summoned for annual training, Lt Gen Weerachai Intusophon, commander of Territorial Defence Command, said on Thursday.

Marking National Army Reserves Day, Weerachai said that people do not have to worry about the Act as only a few of the reserve unit will be summoned for 10 days training and compensation will be paid.

Weerachai said that the Act aims to produce a reserve unit for the country by drafting from military training students and decommissioned conscripts and some of them will be summoned to receive short-period training.

“I would like to stress that only 20 per cent of the reserve unit will be called for training. The training period is short, one day for orientation and nine days for military training. Moreover, all officers will receive the payment and travel cost for joining the training,” he said.

He added that the military cannot summon a large number of people because of budget problems and the people selected for training will be chosen based on their career.

because of budget problems

Bought too many tanks, subs, missiles and aircraft in the last two years?

Would be interesting to see the total reserve numbers: I've seen figures ~ 250,000 but no clue if those are accurate, up-to-date and cover ALL reservists.

According to Global Firepower, Thailand ranks 33rd in Active Reserve Military Personnel through 2016. Other rankings: Israel 15th, USA 11th, and Vietnam 1st. http://www.globalfirepower.com/active-reserve-military-manpower.asp

I wonder how much they can get if they sell the aircraft carrier? It's sitting pretty and not going anywhere plus if it's gone

we'll have room for the three subs to sit there looking pretty. Would someone please pass on to an Admiral? Then send

the money to the Army to pay for some training of the reserves. Also, another suggestion. Send a few of the best reservist

to China for Sub Training.

Cant call up the reserves to be trained because of budget problems Maybe have budget problems but no problems buying 3 outdated subs i see the Chinese are making haste to sign the contract  Never did it enter in their minds they would find a bunch of fools who would buy those subs  What is the old saying they are thinking " Make hay while the sun shines"

the military value of a reservist, who was in the school cadet force or a conscript kicking his heels pointlessly several years ago, and has now undergone nine days training to "bring him up to speed" is pretty doubtful.

Selecting candidates based on their careers - interesting. I wonder whether they will be called because their civilian skills are useful : civil engineers, mechanics and telecoms technicians spring to mind, or because they are people whose "other" activities and interests the military wish to keep an eye on?
