Yes you can! I tried a second approach as wrote to True via their web site support page and unlike the phone call the web support simply asked me to confirm ID and ID number and then they switched me immediately to a non tourist prepaid plan they suggested called All-Net Sabai Call but I could have chosen whatever I wanted it.

Therefore worth trying different methods to get what you want. Now I can extend validity of SIM up to a year I think, useful if I don't need it a few months at a time.
