Superheroes to the rescue - Abbot hopes Spiderman will attract the faithful

CHIANG MAI: -- A temple in Chiang Mai is turning to superheroes and modern technology to bring the faithful flooding in.

 

Wat Phranorn Pukha in San Kamphaeng district even has an area where drivers can get a bit of luck to hopefully avoid the carnage on the roads, reported Daily News.

 

While a centerpiece Buddha seems to be glancing down and doing some holy texting.

 

Abbot Sankharak Uthena Utheno said it was all designed to get more people in - whether it was appropriate or not he would leave others to decide that.

 

At the entrance to a chapel containing a reclining Buddha image are traditional Grandfather and Grandmother demons.

 

"Pu" has a tablet and phone in his lap while "Yaa" is rather neglecting her guard duties by playing on her own tablet.

 

Nearby man sized comic heroes Spiderman and Ultraman are carrying a gong. The figures are carved from wood.

 

Near the monks' quarters is a bell that can be rung for luck but only on certain days. It is there so that drivers can get a bit of help in staying alive on the nation's treacherous roads.

 

However, there is a comical "disclaimer" sign in Thai saying that while they do fortune telling, they are not all that accurate.

 

The temple also has a centerpiece 129 inch high seated white Buddha that is glancing down at something in his left hand.

 

The abbot said that technology was getting everywhere and his temple was no exception.
