PoiPet visa run...

Recommended Posts

Went to do a border run yesterday in PoiPet, first one in like 8 years since I'm always flying in and out of svb instead. But the woman really looked at my UK passport and asked the normal questions, why I come here so much blah blah blah... I had tourist visa in Oct and stayed 90 days then one month out then back in Feb on another TV and 90 days... So I knew I might get some hassle, but she said next time cannot do this because I come back same day?? In her broken English I'm not sure what she meant? At PoiPet they just stamped me in and out for 600 thb at 1pm.. I already had evisa. Then I went to the casino for about 5 hours then came back across the bridge.

I didn't argue with her and piss her off that I'm allowed two border runs a year since she stamped me after about 10 minutes of questions! But does anyone know if I have to stay a few days across the border before coming back?

Friend suggested I get a new passport so they don't see all the stamps!

There are no rules on the Thai side about how long you must remain outside Thailand. Coming straight back is supposed to be allowed.

There is a little known rule on the Cambodian side that, unless you have a Cambodian business visa (or arriving by air) you must spend at least one night in Cambodia. This is often not enforced. If it is, the Cambodian immigration officials are looking for a few baht to look the other way. That might be the 600 baht charge you were hit with, though it is too high. 200-300 baht is quite enough.

True - and some other land-borders (notably Myanmar) have lightened-up, since they have the "2 per year" rule to fall-back on now.  But at Poipet - that is the worst place to cross with any type of visa - even Non-O-Multi folks have had troubles with in/outs.

Even if you are headed to Phnom Penh (not coming back through Aranya/Poipet), if they see frequent travel in your history, expect many questions - the sort you would expect if entering directly from Syria  - not what you would expect when leaving the country.   I suspect this is because the Ershwan Shrine killers came in that border.

I suggest using Ban Laem or Ban Packard if headed across the border in that general area.
