MAE SAI: -- Army troops shot dead nine armed guards of a drug caravan and seized 700,000 methamphetamine tablets near the Thai-Burmese border in Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province on Saturday night.

The Pa Muang task force said that the slain gunmen came from Myanmar.

Acting on an intelligence report that a drug caravan would sneak across the border through Ban Pa Mee in Tambon Wiang Pang Kham, Mae Sai district on Saturday, a combined army and para-military ranger unit was dispatched to the scene to intercept the drug gang.

At about 8.30 pm, a group of men was spotted and the troops ordered them to stop only to find themselves shot at. The troops returned fire and engaged in a fierce fight which lasted briefly.

Well done, Now get them started down South here on the Insurgents. It's time to get Real Serious.

Shoot first, ask questions afterwards (or not). Great to see we have a democratic judicial process in Thailand.

Oh well when Thaksin did the same he was soooo bad ,now the junta is doing same  then all is good

Did you even bothered to read it?

troops ordered them to stop only to find themselves shot at

Are you being rude howard? Why?

My response is to the troopers' explanation: Likely story!!!

The truth is we'll never know the truth.

There are no protocols. No checks and balances. Look at the young guy who was shot and we were told it was all justified. They say they have CCTV but won't show it. I wonder why.

Poor drug smuglers.

men lying dead along with six M16 and one AK47 assault rifles and several knapsacks containing 700,000 methamphetamine pills.

Yep, it definitelly indicates "better surrender to police and smile" types of people.

IMO it would have been better to have a couple more weapons found; only 7 rifles and 9 bodies, from the report.

If only to stop people speculating it was an ambush by the joint force.......................

Why the quotes around 'drug smugglers', nothing in the story suggests otherwise?

Highly unlikely that armed drug smugglers would shoot to avoid apprehension and spending many years in jail? What do you consider more likely?
