Two men are being hunted by police in Phnom Penh after a government official was shot dead in his car on Saturday night. Soeung Phaneth, 28, the deputy chief of legal affairs at the Ministry of Water Resources, was chased by two men on a motorbike and shot three times in his chest and left shoulder in Por Senchey district. He died immediately in his Toyota Camry, while the gunmen fled.

Por Senchey police chief Yim Sarann said the victim was on his way home from a wedding at the Koh Pich Centre in Tonle Bassac district.   The assailants followed him from the wedding. “The gunmen pursued him after he got into his car,” Mr Sarann said.

“As he was parking, one of the suspects got off the bike, walked over and shot him three times.” Chim Rithy, chief of military police in Por Senchey, said officers were still trying to establish a motive for the attack.
