Eight Cambodian women have been rescued and repatriated from Malaysia just days after both governments reinstated the sending of Cambodian domestic workers there. According to a Labour Ministry statement, the domestic workers were brought home after they made a complaint to the Cambodian embassy on May 2. They said they had been overworked at the hands of their Malaysian employers.

The women are from Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham and Kampong Speu provinces. They were all back in Cambodia yesterday. The eight domestic workers went to Malaysia through a recruitment agency in November last year, however it is unclear if all of them used legal channels.

The woman from Kampong Speu said she had gone there illegally and was put to work on a rubber plantation in the northern state of Kedah. However the backbreaking work was too much for her to handle, which forced her to seek the embassy’s help earlier this month. According to the ministry, as many as 60 Cambodian domestic workers were repatriated from Malaysia in the first quarter of 2017 alone.
