I was under the impression that the one big positive visa regulation change was that tourist visa would be for 90 days, thus no extension required. Did I imagine this?

You believed a Pattaya based news report (that was false) I suspect. The only change in tourist visas is that some countries now only get 30 days instead of 60 days on entry.
