Hi,

I wWas there for a non-imm B Single entry last week, was OK for me. My friend got a tourist visa Single Entry (2 months) with no hassle.

Rule 1 : Please go Laos with your Laos Visa, so you can take the bus directly from Udon Thani to Vientiane (and pass immigration easily. This bus is fast, but does not wait for people to make visa on arrival in Laos. (80 Bt).

OR

Make your visa on Arrival, price around 30 USDollar (bring USD - rule 2 - because the change is 1$ = 50 Bt) !

Trip Pricing : Border -> Embassy (150 -200Bt) for a taxi directly to embassy ( 20 mn)

Ask for the visa before midday.

Gget your visa the day after between 1 and 3 PM.

Good luck,

Philippe

I have been to Laos a few times. When going to Laos I usually take the overnight train, but you can take a tour bus.

I usually obtain my Laos visa in Bkk, so when I arrive close to the border from the train station all I need to do is take a tuk tuk to the border, which isn't that expensive, about 60b and not very far. It should only take a few minutes.

You can get a Laos visa at the border and I think it costs $10. If I can remember there should be a sign saying visa above 2 small windows. Just fill in a form and give your passport. Then you go to the right and pass the checks. Once you have passed you can take a shared mini bus, apparently cheaper if more people take it, so try and get a few people to gether for a cheaper price. You will be taken to Vangvien. Hotels are fairly cheap and the Thai embassy is there. Again, just take a tuk-tuk to the embassy, they will usually wait for a little extra money.

When at the embassy, you enter the gates and go to the left, look for a marquee type place. Take a form and fill in the info. The form states you need 2 photos and a photocopy of your passport, but I have been a few times and I have never needed them yet, but to be safe and all that. You pay 1000b and pick up the visa the following day between 12 and 3. The visa in the passport does not give the length of time, but when you go back to the border the Thai side will give 60 days.

If you have any other questions, just ask

Andy

The overnight train from BKK to Nong Khai (about 11000 baht return for 2nd class sleeper - nice trip).

20 baht to the border on a tuktuk.

about $32 for a visa at the border (takes 5 mins)

a taxi to the embassay (all the taxi drivers know where you are going) costs 100 baht

go directly to the embassy and hand in the application before midday (should have an hour to spare). The embassy are not friendly and are likely to refuse for no real reason - get all the correct documents, 100% sure.

get a tuktuk to the middle of town (scandinavian bakery), 40 baht and find a guest house (250-500 baht). Get some beer laos on the corner and drink away (50 baht a litre)

walk down the street to the french rstaurant and have a great 3 course meal (with wine) for 350 baht - the best value, quality food you'll ever had.

back to the bar on the corner for more beer laos and entertainment (very friendly place)

pick up your visa the next afternoon.

get a tuktuk to the border (250 baht)

20 baht to the train station (make sure you have a return ticket as third class standing for 11 hours isn't nice.

Lovely little trip. Enjoy.

train is only 1100 baht, return (or you could fly for 11,000 baht return.).

use Thai baht as currency (they'll give you Laos kip in change which is OK, but spend it in Laos)
