BANGKOK: -- An explosion at the guest room for retired military officials at King Mongkut hospital injured a dozen of elderly people.

It was not immediately known whether a surge in electricity caused the explosion or not, but all the injured were admitted to the emergency room for treatment.

There was no fire when it exploded.

Authorities are still investigating the cause as some said it was a gas explosion.

The incident happened at the first floor room in the Chalermphrakiat building.

Bomb explosion suspected at Phramongkutklao Hospital

1aa.jpg

An explosion inside the Phramongkutklao Hospital that left 24 injured was likely to come from a bomb.

Deputy commissioner of the Royal Thai Police Pol Gen Srivara Ransibrahmanakul said an object that was similar to an integrated circuit was found by explosive ordnance disposal police indicating it might be an explosion from small explosive.

The explosive had a narrow destructive range of a few metres, he said.

However the EOD team is still scouring the room for more evidence.

Earlier at noon today the director of the hospital held a brief press conference to reveal the number of injuries caused by the explosion at the dispensing room on the first floor of the Chalermphrakiat Building inside the hospital compound.

The room dispenses medications to retired and sick army officers.

The hospital director did not give details of the explosion.

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Monday asked the public not to panic following the bomb attack at an Army hospital in the heart of the capital in broad daylight.

He said he had ordered an immediate investigation into the attack at Phramongkutklao Hospital, said government Spokesman Lt-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd.

The attack hit a dispensary room for commissioned officers on the first floor of the Chalermprakiat building, slightly injuring 24 people. The hospital is situated in central Bangkok on Rajavithee Road near Victory Monument in Ratchathewi district.

Prayut said he had learned about the details of the attack from the defence minister and Army commander in chief.

The attack came on the third anniversary of the coup, which was led by Prayut who was then Army commander in chief.

Sansern said the hospital had already sealed off the scene of the attack pending an investigation.

BANGKOK: -- The bomb that hit an army hospital in Bangkok on the third anniversary of the coup on Monday was hidden in a vase in a room named “Wongsuwan” in honour of Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan.

An initial investigation determined that the explosives were in a green vase that contained artificial flowers.

The vase was placed on a chair inside the Wongsuwan room in Phramongkutklao Hospital, the source said, adding that it was not yet known when the act was committed.

Authorities are checking hospital security camera footage. At least 25 people were injured in the attack, mostly of whom were only slightly hurt.

Regardless of who you are or your politics bombing a hospital waiting room is completely unacceptable and unforgivable.

The perpetrators obviously consider they are at war and have never heard go the Geneva Convention.

"seek to protect people who are not or are no longer taking part in hostilities; these include the sick and wounded of armed forces on the field, wounded, sick, and shipwrecked members of armed forces at sea, prisoners of war, and civilians."

"Clearly the country is not ready for democracy" says tomorrows press release.

Will have to stay in power and delay elections etc etc blah blah blah.

Oh yes, a bomb, of course is the ultimate expression of democracy.

Or the wish for democracy.

Using hospitals, religious buildings, schools for terrorist activities is a boon for terrorists.

If attacked by regular army or police it can always be claimed by terrorists that the army or police were killing innocents.

And terrorists are not bound by any convention or even morals.

Hospital bomb attack an ‘unspeakable act of terror’

n1.jpeg

The National Human Rights Commission on Monday denounced the bomb attack on an army hospital in Bangkok, saying it was an inhumane act and an unspeakable act of terror.

Commissioner Angkhana Neelapaijit said she was truly upset that the attackers chose to attack a hospital.

“Although Phramongkutklao Hospital is an army hospital it treats everybody without discrimination, it did not treat only the army officers,” she said.

If it was implemented to mark the third anniversary of the coup, it should be regarded as being an unspeakable act of terror and inhumane action as a hospital is not the venue for conflicts.

“Even during the war time, hospitals, medical personnel and innocent people are protected.

“I want to condemn the act that attacked a medical place and injured patients and relatives waiting for medical care. The attack in a hospital absolutely violated international human rights laws. The attackers’ acts are considered brutal, inhumane,” she said.
