Pickup driver arrested for smuggling 35 Cambodians to Bangkok

By The Nation

CHACHOENGSAO: -- Police found 35 undocumented Cambodians packed inside a pickup truck that was intercepted in Chachoengsao on its way to Bangkok on Friday.

Police arrested the driver, Suriyon Meewirat, 36, and charged him with smuggling undocumented immigrants into the kingdom.

Police at a road checkpoint in Chachoengsao’s Mahasarakham district spotted the truck with a black canvas covering its back.

When they waved the truck stop, it sped off toward Mueang district. When police in the Mueang district stopped the truck at a roadblock they found 21 Cambodian men, nine women and five children. None of them carried immigration documents.

Suriyon said he was paid Bt1,000 to deliver the Cambodians to Bangkok.

Mahasarakham district?  I thought Mahasarakham was in the North East.  Must be Phanom Sarakham, that's more likely.  The 35 Cambodians must have been strapped in like pigs going to slaughter.  Maybe the reporter got the number wrong as well.  Was it even a pickup, or perhaps a 10 tonner.
