You cannot get a single entry tourist visa at immigration. You can only apply for it at a embassy or consulate,

The only thing you can do at immigration is apply for a 30 day extension of the 60 day entry you got from a tourist visa.

thankyou can they pre date it with proof of flight

I am not aware of cases where they are asking to see flight-bookings to grant a 30-day extension to a Tourist-Visa.

The issue you may face, however, is that you cannot apply for the extension "too soon" - this policy varies by office, and sometimes depending on whether it is high or low season.

A re-entry permit would only be valid to the date your current 60 day entry from the tourist visa you have ends. When you enter the country using the re-entry permit you would get stamped in to that date. A re-entry permit adds no days to your stay.

You can apply for the re-entry permit at any time during your 60 day entry.

It seems you may have an extension of stay based upon retirement.

You can get a re-entry at anytime at immigration. A single re-entry permit costs 1000 baht and a multiple 3800 baht.

You will need a completed TM8 form with a 4 X 6 cm photo attached. Copies of your passport photo page, visa. entry stamp, extension stamp and TM6 departure card.

Just anticipating another misapprehension you may be under ...

The re-entry permit covers the whole period of your existing permission to stay. It does not have any effect on the date your permission to stay ends, and you can apply for it at any time with it having exactly the same effect. The effect is to ensure leaving and reentering Thailand leaves your permission to stay intact.

You were told correctly. You need a reentry permit, or your current extension of stay will be dead as soon as you leave Thailand.

The TM-8 (Application for Re-Entry to Return Into the Kingdom) can only be submitted to a Thailand Immigration Office in-country. Once acquired, when returning to Thailand, you MUST note the re-entry permit number on the TM-6 Arrival Page to continue using a non-expired permission of stay.

QUOTE:

On your return, put the re-entry permit number in the 'visa number' box (I write re-entry next to it as well).
You will be stamped to the end of your existing extension of stay (the re-entry permit does not net you extra time).  Your 90 day reporting timer re-starts when you return, so your next report will be 90 days after that date.

also...

if your current extension (permission of stay) expires before you have a chance to reapply for another year you will then need to start the whole process anew from the beginning  -- and that will involve an Embassy.

just a heads up on another site i did not see any mention of the tm6 as a requirement for the tm 8, obviously not a problem but could have been one if i got there and was asked for it

The TM6 is your Arrival/Departure card.

If you forget to use the TM8 stamp written number when re-entering Thailand you technically automatically cancel any non-expired permission of stay.  That's the only relationship those to papers have.
