An this may also happen to inocent Thai people, as such things does not exist here, they will be complete shocked.

Oh brave new world. An earthquake damages a "backbone" in a relatively small link off Taiwan and Internet traffic is negatively impacted throughout Asia to varying degrees. Well I have sone bad news for you, these "backbones" are rather vulnerable and the "web" is not quite as robust as many may think. Sure, most of the traffic that is normally routed through the broken line can be rerouted, but imagine what happens when more than one of these "backbone" lines get damaged.

I never thought much about it until I was told that there is a major international Internet line running only a few feet away from my work place here in the US, a land based equivalent to the undersea cables. The person in charge of the line stopped by and we talked for almost two hours as I had volunteered for a local city committee that was advising on a project that was going to impact the line. The city had not taken into consideration that their project would disrupt the line, they were not really aware the line was there, and the costs were daunting.

Any project that requires a breaking or stopping of this line incurs a cost of $30,000 per hour. Yep, that is a 3 with four zeros following. An accidental severing of the line could incur the same costs and the minimum time to repair would be several hours. If the project required exposing the line, it is normally buried, then the city must pay for a guard (off-duty policeman) 24/7 while the line is exposed. The total estimated cost to the city was an unanticipated $1,000,000. This was not only a surprise to myself, a non-techie, but was a surprise to the City Engineer and the head of the City's Public Works.

The bottom line is that although the Internet is robust, it is not invulnerable, and it can be taken down.

My connection is still bad with ToT DSL, German pages working fine, Gmail not at all and a lot of other things doensnt work too. Seems that this pal6-cat-telecom server is fixed but noq its the next one causing problems at level3-us-mil52 hotmail is working 50%, no idea if I can fix it with these proxy settings as I never use proxys.

Any helpfull idea how to connect with any kind of speed to that server 87.237.38.200 ?? I dont have any connectin to it at all

It seems to be getting better and better as it gets later. I've been surfing around for a few hours now and the number of (especially American) websites I'm able to access is increasing. Is this because Asian residents are logging off and going to bed? Or are the techies finally working out some new routes? Hopefully the improvement continues through the day tomorrow.

its not a political thread here anyway. Just checked your prof and learned that u live in phuket too. Hopefully you will not change your telephoneline to ToT because its the worst service of all. Still waiting since a week for one of the service guys after 10 phone calls to bkk and hkt office. Stick to TT&T heard its the best and see it in my friends shop. Always working, always fast, NEVER problems except today. ToT is a lazy bunch of uneducated ppl, the service guy could not install the new DSL modem under Windows ML.... I have to install XP for him just as example. There is just one guy able to speak a little bit english in the office in phuket etc etc.

I use to play a mmorg, called EvE online and there is no connection at all since last night, the server is in iceland. I have unfortunately no chance to change the ISP here in my area.

just made a phone call with Spore and net is fine there. Still no Gmail and no Google german pages working fine, SKYPE hasnt a problem at all for the whole day.

so i pay much over

no it takes time to update backbone router tables. For a while the packets did not have an efficient alternative route. Getting a lot better now.

I think I am correct. Also some of the other guys are correct. The DNS is bummed.

I cannot get on www.google.co.th but can with their IP http://72.14.205.104/

Let me take a wild guess how this happened:

1. Earthquake broke the cables.

2. TOT technicians thought their DNS servers were broke and kicked the (insert your favorite word here) out of them.

3. Someone fixed the cables or re-routed the traffic.

4. Nothing works now because the DNS servers are broke.

I swapped my settings a few days ago, and are quite happy with the results.

Your actuall initiating/conection speed increase will vary with what ISP you travel with.

Some have great DNS servers, others not..  

Personally I am with Chello, a subdivision of GET(former UPC) here in Oslo Norway, and it cut my initiating times a tad by swapping to the Open DNS servers.

Seems kinda odd that this problem would affect Thailand to such an extent

when the quake was in Taiwan...

Maybe the Thai isp's do what they usually does when there's a problem.

haven't you seen any of the news. its the main undersea cable that connects Asia to the North America and it was damaged near Taiwan.

I dealt with Google downtime last year and for any of you that can access your acct for just a few minutes, don't forget you can fwd your email to a yahoo acct. it's pretty much what i have set up and when sh*t hits the fan, i use Yahoo! Mail as a backup, at minimum, to check my email. I say this cuz unless you have a Yahoo! Plus acct, you won't be able to reply with an alternate address. If you do reply, you may get a bit of divergence you can clean up later.

btw, didn't see anyone reply in regards to why google's servers are so hard to reach - from my perspective, there's no free lunch - Google may be free but you get what you paid for and really surprised Yahoo! servers have come through twice in one year!

I am in CM and aside for a little while yesterday have been able to POP my email off of gmail no problem.

The Cable Ship Lodbrog arrived on the repair site at 0545 GMT today to repair the FNAL Segment E between Busan, Korea and Hong Kong initially.

The Cable Lodbrog is the first cable ship on-site and has already established contact with our Cable Landing Station engineers in Busan and Hong Kong. Power safety control has been passed to the ship and they are commencing their preparations to begin the cable recovery and affect a repair. Their initial cutting run should be carried out in the next 24 hours. Our expectation is that this repair could take seven days if everything goes to plan, however that may be longer depending on sea state and sea bed conditions. With previous earthquake faults, we have experienced "slumping" where debris has slide down into the valleys on the sea bed and this hampers cable detection and recovery. We may also have multiple cable breaks, but initial indications is that damage could be confined to a 400 meter area.

Ad-hoc restoration for those circuits ordered by customers using EAC capacity is now underway. We are also trying to improve quality of IP services out of Hong Kong and several options are being investigated as our current connectivity is restricted to four STM-1s to London. Hopefully in the next 24 hours we will have some improvement.

From my view the performance is good now. I dont think it is only because I changed the DNS numbers for my ToT DSL. Even the seabones work fine at the moment. THAIVISA is a bit slow (no kidding) but everything else is fine...in the moment....

Thanks to this guy from Norway for the tip with the free DNS numbers. it increased my speed really, and I belive the numbers are safer as the normal DNS numbers our ISPs provide.
