Three killed, 8 injured as truck ploughs through roadside restaurant

NONG BUA LAMPHU: -- A speeding trailer truck lost control and crashed into five vehicles and two motorcycles before ramming into a roadside restaurant in Nong Bua Lamphu province late Thursday night, killing three diners and injuring eight others.

Police said the accident happened at 10pm on Highway No 210 in Nong Bua Lamphu’s Na Klang district.

The truck crashed into two cars, two pickup trucks, a van and two motorcycles before ramming into the Ocha Restaurant.

Police said Thongkham Piroonsunthorn, 50, a local resident, died at the scene after being hit by the front of the truck. Two other patrons of the shop died at the Na Klang Hospital. They were identified as Wichit Ariyapimak, 49, a construction contractor from Chon Buri province, and Wilasini Thaweechart, 26, a local resident.

The truck driver was identified as Runjuan Pongkwanoi, 30, from Chaiyaphum province. Police said he tested negative for alcohol and drug use.

Eyewitnesses told police that they saw the truck speeding alongside a pickup and a car before it swerved to the left and crashed into the parked vehicles and the shop.

Kunthon Kosaikan, 23, an assistant cook, said about 20 people were dining in the shop when the accident occurred. He said the shop owner and staff were safe.

why is it that they do nothing to stop these idiot drivers, speed governors would be a great start and so would proper testing so that drivers actually learnt to handle trucks, not just slipping an envelope to the ones approving the licence in the first place. Log books would also be a big improvement but again all these things require extra work  and that is something many refuse to do, easier to let people die than crack down on the cause.

Come on general kick your a..e in gear, use your precious article 44 to enforce speed limiters being fitted.

Help stop this daily carnage on the roads NOW.

How many more innocent lives have to be shattered before something is done.

Most of these truck accidents are caused by speed, incompetent idiots behind the wheels, who have no idea how to drive properly.

"...tested negative for alcohol and drug use...Eyewitnesses told police that they saw the truck speeding alongside a pickup and a car..."

So, what this indicates is that the driver was too incompetent and irresponsible to be driving. However, nothing will be done to rid the roads of others who lack the skills to drive safely, and we will be reading the same headlines in years to come.

The scariest part of this is that one does not have to be on the road to be a victim. At least if one is driving, he can look around, theoretically, and have some chance of avoiding a crash. Who, looks around for runaway motor vehicles while eating dinner?

These trucks are a menace. I've had several of them nearly wipe me out. The drivers in them think they are indestructible and that anyone else on the road is just an inconvenience to be pushed out the way if necessary.

It also says something about this country's non existant town planning laws that a restaurant would be allowed to set up shop so close to a highway.

very often happens that the ship is build in a small road that becomes a highway

so? where is the problem? it's Darwin evolution theory at work.

Don't recall anything about murdering diners with a motor vehicle in "On the Origin of Species." Unless, of course the idea was to remove roadside diners from the gene pool. Now if the driver had offed himself by driving off a bridge then that could be seen as Darwinism in action. Going to have to give it another read. It has been decades since my Evolutionary Biology course at uni.

Or maybe evolution works differently where you are from: the moon.

"Town planning" is somewhat of an oxymoron when you consider Thailand's cities and towns, that are, like most cities in the world, an urban sprawl that has taken decades or centuries to achieve. Thailand's towns do have some planning authorities, but in this case, it is in rural Nong Bua Lamphu and, like most unincorporated areas, you can basically set up shop wherever you like, especially on road frontage adjacent to your property.

I'm sure you'd agree, it isn't the location of the restaurant that is at fault in this case, it is the manner in which the trailer truck was being driven.

I don't understand how they can justify NOT requiring every commercial vehicle to have functional cameras recording data full time.

The process would only take 12 months if it were required by insurance companies... they're already toying with discounts for cameras.

I agree. That is the perception and apart from the "professional drivers" employed by the major transport companies, particularly fuel tankers (Shell, PTT, etc),  many of the independents can often be largely termed "cowboys" and that, unfortunately, is an insult to cowboys, who largely know what they are doing, where they are going and usually get there safely, herd 'n all.  :cowboy:

Not really. Looking at both of their ages, most likely they have passed on their genes. Unfortunately, these idiots reproduce at such a young age it's almost impossible for them to select themselves out of their gene pool.

I didn't read about any murder, just about an accident, was an accident that wiped out dinosaurs so no difference between the two events.

sent from the moon.

Certainly an accident the meteorite that wiped out dinosaurs, but this incident was not an accident, it was a collision caused by excessive speed for the conditions and lack of skill. Completely avoidable, nothing accidental.

That's 1/4 of a human head, viewed from behind, right?

That does look suspiciously like a human head right in the centre of the photo. You never know when your number is up !

A couple of comments, first about police intervention.  It's much easier (and more lucrative) to stop a motorcycle.  Second, these "roadside" restaurants are as much a part of the problem as the truck driver.  They use the main roadway as their parking lot.  It's only a matter of time before accidents like this happen.

Same people saying the same old thing about Thai road safety knowing all the time that nothing will change. Broken record stuff.

Give up! Nothing is going to change and you know it.

But if you did away with the Governors in Thailand,  who would frequent the underage sex parlour?

That was the apologist that also said he never saw a traffic accident in Thailand, and driving here is the same as the UK.

Let them stop driving at night almost 73% of the accidents with  minivans, bussez and trucks happens between 7 pm and 6 am.
