Best Movies Of 2006

I don't think I saw an excellent movie all year at the theatres.

Good:

Casino Royale: Good, some problems, but I think Craig looks like the right choice for the new-look Bond.

The Departed - Very good, not great. Scorcese back to what he does best, gritty urban stuff.

The Prestige - Pretty good, some flaws.

Pirates of the Carribean - OK, really only as a follow-up to the original and the fact that it had Jack Sparrow again, Johnny Depp's classic creation. A bit overlong, commercially Disneyish and disappointing.

Bad:

DaVinci Code: Bland, boring cinematic version of cheap airport reading.

Miami Vice: So disjointed and not related to the original at all. Comically bad, but not in an enjoyable way.

Trying to recall other ones, still in a holiday funk.

APACALYPTO WITH MEL GIBSON, HAVNT SEEN IT YET BUT THE PREVIEW ROCKS!

If the best movie of the year is one you haven't seen it must have been a dissapointing year.

Best one I saw was The Departed.

Excellent, great acting , with the exception of Mark Wahlberg(sp).

Cheers

Good movie, but the HK original, Internal Affairs, is even better.

Hrrrm...

Personally I felt Casino Royale is a dissappointment to me. The reason being it's too much "fighting" like Jackie Chan's movie. My "ideal" James Bond is suppose to be smart, witty and of course, sexy... not rough and fights like in Chinese kung foo movie.

The Break Up - Stupid, pointless movie.

Talladega Nights - Ok, but nothing spectacular.

Borat - Hilarious but sometimes I think he does go a bit too far.

Date Movie - Really really really really really really really bad movie.

World Trade Centre - An interesting perspective on the event.

John Tucker Must Die - Enjoyable and funny.

Rocky Balboa - A real surprise (I had been very skeptical). It had the heart and grit of the first two Rockys that was missing in the others. A great ending to the saga.

There is a James Bond thread in the Farang Pub - you can debate it there!

Now that the year is coming to an end. how was your year 2006? well in terms of movies released. what were disapointing releases? i missed quite a bit of the year watching movies with three kids to take care of. so lets get some opinions.

:D

I don't watch a lot of movies, but the two i liked this year were:

1. The Devil Wears Prada (someone else mentioned it on this forum)

2. The Prarie(sp?) Home Companion Movie. (Lily Tomlin should get at least best supporting actress Oscar for her role)

:o

the Prestige

the Departed (and I thought it was just as good as infernal affairs and Mark Wahlberg was excellent)

was so happy to see 2 excellent films towards the end of the year as everything was beginning to get the same

the Queen was pretty good too

I wish I could see:

Borat

Pan's Labyrinth

Children of Men

I thought the Prestige was excellent and original.

Whilst the Departed was a good film for me it loses marks for being a rehash of the great Hong Kong film Infernal Afairs

Casino Royale falls into the disappointing category - I thought the new James Bond himself was impressive but the storyline seemed somewhat missing.

I wouldn't say it was a vintage year for films but then I don't think there has been such a year for quite some time.

It's surprising you walked out of Miami Vice yet you managed to sit through DaVinci Code....was it because you fell asleep watching the DaVinci Code?

There we go, my TOP 10 of 2006...I hope I didn't forget to think of another good one that should also be on my list...

1: Babel (Smart, beautiful, unparalleled, my top movie of 2006)

2: Syriana (Lots of food for thought, great story, great pictures)

3: United 93 (Fantastic realization, the best and most realistic display of air traffic control I have ever seen in a movie)

4: The Departed (Not Scorcese's best, yet absolutely great cinema)

5: Good Night And Good Luck (Great history lesson)

6: Scoop (Woody Allen at his best)

7: The Inside Man (Witty, good acting)

8: Khabi Alvida Nee Khena (Bollywood at its best)

9: Borat (Just too weird...!)

10: Volver (One of Almodovar's best for me)

Worth mentioning:

The Eternal Gardener (very good movie, missed top 10 only narrowly)

Capote (great acting)

Everything Is Illuminated (interesting theme)

Casino Royal (pleasant surprise of the year, I had already given up on James Bond movies)

Worst for me:

Children of Men (didn't like the story. the only movie I walked away from in the middle of the screening last year, and I estimate having been to the movies at least 60 times)

Apocalypto wasn't to bad in my opinion, but not really special. Like a 2 hour rainforest documentary with action elements :o

Haven't seen Prestige or The Queen yet, but I am very curious about them.

There weren't too many movies in '06 that tempted me to see them, and of those only one I really liked: The Fast and the Furious 3. Strange that not a single person has mentioned it on their good/bad lists.

My worst? World Trade Center. Watching the misery and confusion of two guys buried in the rubble for two hours was hardly a fitting tribute to that day. I wanted to see the lives and events of the office workers, hijackers, pilots, and others. Films with Nicholas Cage rarely disappoint me but this time it did. Maybe it wouldn't have been such a great disappointment if it had a different title.

That's probably because most people (including myself) thought it was crap. Granted, it may be entertaining crap, but seriously how would you

even compare that movie to some of the smart AND entertaining AND well acted AND thoughtful movies that have been listed on this thread so far. It may be cool if one likes movies with cars and chicks with few clothes on and lots of action, but really that movie is not an extraordinary achievement in film making as such. Not intending to tread on your toes with this, just my honest opinion... :o

World Trade Center...yeah...I thought that one was a total waste of time too. Oliver Stone could have made a lot better picture if he had chosen a different approach.
