my condo swimming pool has a  concrete post with  standard electrical socket attached to it less than 2 metres from the waters edge

the restaurant which surrounds the pool sometimes plugs a fan into the socket with the wire trailing on the floor

also staff sometimes charge their mobile phone from the socket and also a laptop

I pointed out to the manager how dangerous it was and he has recently had his odd job man fit a breaker switch {see pic} above the socket however after a little research it seems it does not give adequate protection????????

I believe what is required is a GFCI ..Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter however after visiting Global House.Home Pro and Baan and Beyond it seems they do not sell such an item

Would a GFCI protect me and others from electrocution and..Where can i obtain such a switch?..I live in Chiang Mai

You could replace the switch with a single pole plus neutral (1P + N) RCBO.  They are available  but you will  have to replace the box also, preferably one with a water proof cover.

Sockets available through ebay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Leviton-Decora-Kiddy-Cop-Smart-Lock-GFCI-Ground-Fault-Interrupter-Sealed-/161726290302?hash=item25a7a3597e:g:vSMAAOSwnDxUrBb-

The postage is more than the socket but at least it won't kill you like an unprotected socket will.

I would go and look at the main CU and see if the circuit/ whole system is protected with an RCBO as it should be.

X2 from ebay.

I picked some up from Alibaba express also. There's some poor quality items from that site & haven't tested mine yet. You'd also want to get the one's with covers. The ones without covers are near impossible to match with gear here (same with the 20amp outlets I ordered from the States). I found the Panasonic outlet covers to be closest. Also make sure they have the round female holes to except the majority of plugs we have here.

I have several of these installed around my house area. SOme are 3 years old now and a few I just installed. My electrician had trouble with the first ones but now "has experience". I order direct from Safe T Cut. They are not a perfect swap out for an original duplex outlet so some degree of fitting is needed to change out but if a new install no problem.

this seems like the solution...my concern would be that as the ordinary socket that is in place at the moment is attached to a solid concrete post, there is no option to fit the GFCI flush into a cavity wall...do they come with a back box as shown because i cannot see any external screw fixing on the GFCI unit?

Did you check the CU to see if either it has an up front RCBO or and individual RCBO installed for that circuit.  If it does, there's no need to add the GFCI socket.

i live in an 80 roomed condo building and dont have access to the electrical system...i am happy to pay for the thing myself as i swim most days because my life and that of kids i see swimming in the pool is worth more than the 700 baht or so that the switch will cost...also i have to be careful that i dont come across as the farang  who worry too much and make trouble lol....if i hand the manger the switch its an easy fix and will put my mind at rest..thanks for your replies

RCBO that should be a drop-in fix should cost 500 Baht or so.

If you can find a 10mA one so much the better.

Recently bought a pile of these RCBO's. Chain stores only had 30mA, Do Home's the cheapest @ aprox B1,150. Our friendly neighborhood elec supply ordered me some 10mA for the about same price. Ran with Schnieder, although Haco was a bit cheaper.

A Haco Din Rail RCD was only B350. (aproximately)

Pretty cheap investments for the longevity of carbon units wandering throughout the property:sleep:
