An army of more than 3,000 monkeys are causing a major headache for the public and restaurant owners in the Wat Khao Takiap area of Hua Hin.

The animals are stealing food especially from tourists visiting the area and creating trouble for the seafood restaurants.

In addition they have damaged roofs and climbed on power cables causing many power cuts sometimes of many hours.

Some of the creatures have been electrocuted creating a further unsightly situation in the neighborhood.

In response to the complaints Hua Hin mayor Noppaporn Wuthikun was in the area yesterday with his entourage to see for himself what needs to be done to solve the problem.

The photo seems to be showing a source of the problem. Why are they feeding them?

Monkeys are disgusting and often dangerous. I would rather have a rat or soi dog infestation than monkeys.

Of course they will be protected and nothing will be done.

Just as the merciful Thai people feed stray dogs and other animals, they see

as making merits to some deity... something will be done about it once

somebody will be attacked and get hurt by the monkeys and not before.. TIT....

People have been getting hurt and killed by soi dogs, the response was to bring in laws to protect the dogs.

Right!

Monkeys on roofs and power cables, stealing food and fabricating power outages.

On street level rabid soi dogs happily biting people.

And below that free running rats, and huge stinking insects.

All part of the "smile, this is Thailand" experience.

Personally, this diminished my list of places to visit.

And I am sorry for that.

By just reading the first words of the headline I thought this was about a different subject.

Me too. I expected to see the uniformed ones. But I realized those in uniforms are creating a major headache for the entire nation, not just Hua Hin.

Really? You guys are GUESTS in this country. If you don't like Monkeys or other native creatures, whose lives are no less important than yours, go and eat somewhere else, I'm sure lots of people who visit this area enjoy the experience of seeing Monkeys, if it annoys you, choose another place, the world doesn't revolve around you and your limited perception, thoughts and petty annoyances, they have equal rights to be there as you do!

Depending on the perception of 'pest' you might be the pests in the area, and not the monkeys!

Respect the natural animals of the Country that you are honoured to be a guest in!

Is there a wild habitat for these wild animals ?  With overzealous alligators and other wild animals, they were transported to wild areas and released.  Is that out of the questions here ?

I would say that once you have 2nd or 3rd generation monkeys there that is the only habitat they know and can live in. Moving them to a 'natural' habitat wouldn't last as they will go looking to find somewhere else where hand-outs and free food is available. The only solution is culling back to managable numbers.

You need a plague of monkeys to give you some perspective.

i LOVE Thailand, am sorry that you don't!!! and i LOVE living here, and have never regretted it for one second;

meanwhile, i love the Netherlands as well, was truly impressed when i visited last year-

so possibly just stay there and don't waste your money traveling to a place that you obviously dislike intensely...

Wow, some posters have clearly upset you.   I enjoy living in Thailand in retirement but I cannot in all honesty say that I feel "honoured" to be here.  I do feel however that my money does seem to be worshipped by the powers that be.

From the OP, it would seem the complaints are coming from locals.

Obviously these monkeys are presenting problem for the local administration-the power company; local residents and shop owners as well as potential tourists. Monkeys can be dangerous as far as bites and some may be rabid.  Wild animals and that is what monkeys are do not belong in populated areas. They should be caught and transported to a jungle area where they can live in the wild

To those who tell others to leave Thailand- I would suggest you look at the other person's opinion before castigating them. Everyone has the right to an opinion even if it doesn't agree with yours.

Correct.

If you have seen monkeys take over gardens, seriously injure or kill family pets and break into houses to wreck the place including emptying the fridges and cupboards while sh-----ng and pi---ing on everything then you soon lose the 'oh, isn't it nice to take of and feed wild nature' idea.

I posted before, a few months ago, on a system that can rid you of monkeys and causes no pain suffering etc.

If you can trap one in a cage, somehow, and spray it with brightly coloured vegetable dye, use a few really bright colours, yellow, green, red etc they don't even have to be permanent or waterproof then release the monkey it will head back to it's troop who will run from it. They don't see it as a monkey and just want away from it. It keeps following, they keeping running and by the time the dye wears/washes off they will be miles away and may not return.

Old Malaysian system.
