Good morning!  Getting married in January 2018 in North Thailand around Chiang Mai!  What do I need to get married and where do I get a certificate to show the US Embassy?  What steps need to be completed for proof of marraige in Thailand? Won't be living with my wife for 6 year's but will be visiting every year!  And do i need to get married in the states when she comes to visit next year to complete the marriage in the states?

I'm from Australia but should be similar.

My wife and I were married back in 2012 in Khon Kaen district.

Had the ceremony on a Saturday night. Not the full 2 day event or whatever the Thai people usually have.

Largely just the wedding breakfast as it would be back in other countries with about 100 guests and included the city mayor.

Wifes Dad had connections.

Had to bring him a bottle of chardonnay all the way from Aus. though !!!

Travelled down to Bangkok in the following week and visited the Australian embassy. If I remember correctly it was to show them my original divorce papers from a previous marriage.

Then we had to go to Thai Immigration for another series of forms or whatever.

Lastly I think it was to an Amphur office in Bangkok for the actual marriage certificate.(about 700 baht my wife just told me)

That was about it. Others may be able to elaborate further but not a big issue by any means.

Don't know about the US requirements but Aussie gov. are usually pretty strict with issues like paperwork and they never had a problem recognising our marriage.

Why do these guys want to buy a cow when they're getting all that milk for free?

See above. Nothing needed. If you're marriage is correctly registered with the Amphur office, you're married in the US.

By the way, just being married doesn't get her into the US. My wife was turned down for a US visa. I expect she'll get it the next time around but the whole process isn't cheap. She did recently get a Schengen visa to visit Europe using the marriage docs that did needed to be translated.

Was really quite painless when I did the paperwork with the Embassy in Bangkok.  Filled out the form saying I had never been married, swore to it and the Consular officer signed off.  My wife and I took that down to the Amphur and got married.   Marriage license is good in the US.  She has a TIN and is on my tax return as a dependent.  When we lived in Jordan (2 years ago) she applied and got her 10 year tourist visa to the States.

We now live back in Chiang Mai.  You will find the Consulate here very easy to deal with IMO.  Great group of folks.

He found a girl going to marry her but is not living with her for six years. Better give her money without going to marry her stay free.

Maybe he is a contractor/consultant and travels alot, maybe he is in the military, etc, etc?  When my wife and I first got married I was still working in some Middle East countries and was only home 2 or 3 weeks every 2 or 3 months.

Can anyone tell me why someone would want to get married to a young lady if they were only going to be here 10% of the time? Makes really no sense to me at all. I mean......Why? Love? Well that can change very quickly...... Er..... Lust? Well that would be an honest answer, but, there's plenty of ways to sort that problem out here without getting married.

Live in sin when you are here is my advice and then, if she still wants you after six year and you the same,,,,,,,,,,,go ahead, tie the knot......

Why are folks against getting married?  What is wrong with being in love and tying the knot.  There are so many bitter folks it seems like.  As I said before, when I first got married I was still consulting for the USG and wasn't home for a fair amount of time for a few years.  Now I am home 80% of the time.

Maybe the OP has a similar situation, maybe he doesn't.  But if they guy wants to marry his local girl ... more power to him.

Bitter, bitter.  Sadly so many folks on here are bitter.  Would you say the same thing if he was marrying a fellow American or someone from the UK, EU or Oz?

All of those that are against marriage only think of themselves. Think about the girl's situation, it is much more acceptable to the community if she is married.

Your wife does not have to be living in the U.S. for you to claim her as a dependent on your tax return.  You need to submit proof-of-marriage along with your T.I.N application.  Be sure to have the marriage license from the Tambon translated into English.

I think I had to paper file my 1040 and include a copy of the T.I.N notice the first year.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Green Bay

1: you need the get document from your USA embassy confirming you are single, not married etc.

2: you nood uptodate passport, birth cert, pictures of you and yours, her document to show not married. If she was married in a village wedding no problem as it is not legally recognisd. Her house book if she has one. Details of any children. All this has to go to the government office where they get married.

That,s it as far as i can remember. But if you go to the local marrage/birth, registery office they will tell you everything you need to present.

best Luck.

We didn't submit proof of marriage with her TIN application.  And didn't include the TIN notice either in the any of the returns.  Odd.  Anyhow, she has her TIN and is on my return as a dependent.  Whew.
