UTHAI THANI, 12 June 2017 (NNT) – The North and Northeastern regions have been told to stay on alert for floods this week with heavy rains predicted throughout the period.

Uthai Thani’s Royal Irrigation Department (RID) office has ordered that the Wang Romklao Dam open all 3 of its floodgates to release water into the Chao Phraya River so that it may take on more upstream water deposited by recent rains. A 24 hour flood watch has been called in the area as water levels have risen to critical heights. Nonetheless, authorities are attempting to maximize water retention with a view to the drought season.

In Chiang Rai province, a storm that hit Wieng Pa Pao district damaged at least 20 homes and a number of vehicles, injuring up to 3 people. Assistance has been dispatched to the area but initial damage assessments are at 1 million baht. Eighteen districts of the province are on alert for landslides and forest runoff.

Saraburi province has also been hit by stormy weather, which put at it at high risk for landslides. Some areas in the province have reported erosion with an exercise park already falling into the Pa Sak River. Relevant agencies have been told to address the situation immediately.

The Meteorological Department foresees such circumstances to persist until June 17 with the north and northeast to see the most rain. Citizens in low lying areas are to be aware of dangers at this time.

At least they are releasing water to make sure a repeat of the 2011 disaster wont happen. Then they stored the water and released at the worst possible time.  Lets hope they keep thinking like this.
