The Unesco representative in Cambodia has expressed support for the Apsara Authority’s actions to prevent the spread of illegal constructions in the Angkor Archaeological Park. The Apsara Authority, the official body which oversees the ancient temples in the area, has told the owners of more than 500 illegal buildings to remove the buildings.

The Apsara Authority has also taken action to demolish some of the illegal constructions that do not comply with the directive. At a press conference after a meeting of the ICC-Angkor Committee in Siem Reap, Unesco Representative in Cambodia Anne Lemaistre was quoted on the Apsara Authority’s Facebook page as saying she lauded the Apsara Authority’s moves to prevent and remove illegal buildings in zones 1 and 2 and would work according to the agreement between Cambodia and Unesco.

“We encourage the Apsara Authority to continue to protect Zone 1 and 2 and protect as much as possible,” she was quoted as saying.  “What we have to say and decide would be in December of the next ICC-Angkor meeting. We may hold a seminar on conservation protection, and I think that now we are doing well, so we really appreciate this process.”
