Good question. Myself, I wonder how they stay under the radar of the immigration authorities.

I am sure some use the convenient overstay option--if you don't leave your room, you may be able to get away with it.

My you do bring sunshine, don't you. Unlike you, I have no basis for my opinion that most just may be guilty of making bad decisions throughout their lives.

Certainly, you can get cheaper accommodations. If you are serious about cutting expenses, the soles of your shoes would do for transportation costs and there is no need for the internet or phone loads. Utilities could be minimized by no a/c, no fan, no refrigerator, no stove or cooking gas, no lights--just go to sleep at night. Primarily just your water bill. You can buy street food much cheaper than shopping and cooking--you can get by on plain rice and fish sauce and drinking the public water.

Hmm, i can think of a cheaper alternative. Go to home country, try to rob a bank, get arrested and you will have an equally enjoyable lifestyle for free ..... when released, repeat.

Who WANTS to live on 20,000 baht a month? And what about your future - will you have a pension, healthcare, a family? I spend about 45,000-50,000 baht a month for family of 3, less than that and some real compromises needed. 34 sq metre condo? My kitchen is bigger than that. Choose to live, not exist.

Some have been abandoned by their Thai wives when the money ran out .Some have Alcohol problems ,maybe exacerbated by their present condition .In other cases it was the Alcohol which brought on their present condition .

55555555 so it's the alcohol that is the problem

not the person....Who tied their hands behind their

back every day and forced them to get drunk?

Chiang mai actually .I hope your good health continues .I have been lucky in that regard so far at least .

Same here.  I exercise daily and watch the diet.  In the past

eight years I have spent about $400 on medical bills and maybe

$200 on dental.   Very lucky!!

Just curious. Do you just get off the toilet with a soaking wet but and walk off into the night?

simply put, if you are soaking wet, you are doing it wrong

He says he has money, but is asking the question out of curiosity.

I think you are right, just trying to get some free advertising for another stupid blog and make money on ads.

There are no ads on blog and no links on the post to make you buy anything. I just keep it around to keep notes on things for later.

But so far yeah this thread has been really valuable on ideas and also how much other people spend on living. For that I'm happy.

How much you paying for that house and where is it?

I'm asking because thinking about the future and kids etc, you say 50,000b which is about ~USD1500, not that much.

Also does that include education for kids?

Pattaya

10000 for a half decent condo

1500 electricity

300 water

700 Internet

500 mobile

2500 visa

Then I put 4000 in my wallet every week and buy food for the week toiletries and cleaning products. That comes to about 800THB. Then I have a night out get drunk if theres any left out of the 4000 I spend it in medium priced restaurants or the odd beer on the beach or In a bar. Anything else I need like clothes health care or bits and pieces I pay for separate.

So that's comes to about 33000THB. Not the best life style but as long as I have the internet I can entertain myself with free movies TV and computer games and ebooks. At least I am out of the rat race.

Education for Children to a Western standard  can cost up to B100,000 a year per child .I have one step child with my Thai wife .It was costing us a basic B20,000 a year plus other costs  at a half decent Thai school in Chiang mai ,with English classes by a Western teacher. She has since won a Kings scholarship to a better Thai school , and our costs have reduced to a basic B10,000 a year .Plus extra costs for uniform and books .

My wife works has her own business which helps out .She has always worked since we met 8 years ago ,

Only stupid and rich foreigners live in Sukhumvit etc.
These areas have higher RE prices than major European cities let alone the poor building quality, expensive neighbourhood, noise, pollution, etc.

Those are not the only bad decisions, little mary. Some may have just been too lazy to work hard enough.

i forgot to mention i also rarely pay for drinking water (in addition to never buying toilet paper).  i just boil the tap water, chill it, then drink it.  no issues in 10 years with this method in bkk.  am i the only one that does this ?

some of my friends in usa will not drink from the tap.  i just laugh and fully enjoying drinking from the tap w/o need for boiling.

Yes you are. I have a filter system but when I'm holidaying for a few weeks out of BKK I buy water for 5 baht to fill up a big 5 liter container

But I'm guessing you live out in the sticks without water machines

Only those smart enough to earn that  amount of money

and enjoy the finer restaurants and shopping

live in that area.

The dumb a**es are in a dumpy  room with a fan and B40

street food every day.

People who have a life and enjoy the buzz of a big vibrant city.

The wealthy stay in fancy condos and eat in fancy restaurants.

Waking up in some slum on the outskirts of chiang rai with roosters and yapping dogs? Who but the desperately poor....

I love "existing". Makes me feel more alive than drowning my sorrows at nana barstool.

Also, this month I tried really hard and only spent 15k baht. Then again, my wife provides me with free housing and utilities.

I love spending my forties in Bangkok instead of slaving away in Canada while someone is paying off my mortgage back home. Heck, next month I could push it and spend only 10k baht.

Haters gonna hate, but I have it great!

You are wasting money by boiling the water .

I get tap water, put it into bottles and leave it on the roof in the afternoon sun , it gets hot enough to make a cup of tea , you can get tea ish leaves from most gardens

I simply cannot work up much sympathy for homeless bums. They would be better off back in their home countries. I once contributed to buy a one way ticket home for one of these guys. That turned out to be a waste of money because he cashed in the ticket and scraped by for another month or so. The next ticket home for this guy came from a very generous prince of a man. That ticket did get used. The poor guy was escorted to the airport by his benefactor who made sure that he got on the plane.

My generous friend told me that the guy was afraid to go home because he had left his home country rather than face a drunk driving charge. That part was apparently true because he was arrested at immigration for the outstanding warrant. The guy's mother was still alive and when the police learned about his financial situation and the story that he came back home to care for his aged mother, they turned him loose. I don't know what happened to him after that.

Sleeping on the sidewalk and begging for food is not my idea of a comfortable retirement.

You think they want to be in that situation .The guy you gave an example of at least had a mother ,and some resources at home .Also what about the youngish Dutch chap in that clip .He did not want to go home and likely never see his children again .

Don't listen to the fools you don't have to loads of money to be happy. You are the same as me renting about my old apartment why taking it slow in Thailand. All the things what most people spend there money on is to make them happy is superficial anyway. As long you got a roof over your head and a few home comforts and can have a night out occasionally it's better then the rat race back home.
