BANGKOK, 29 June 2017: Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports says the country will focus on the developing tourism linked to sports, marine and food.

Welcoming a courtesy visit from members of the US – ASEAN Business Council, last week, Tourism and Sports Minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, said collaboration between related departments and authorities would encourage public-private partnerships (PPP) which was the key to growing tourism.

“Currently, the Thai tourism industry no longer focuses on head count, but has shifted its focus to boosting tourism revenue, as last year’s figures showed that tourism revenue constitutes as much as 17.7% of Thailand’s GDP and there is a need to maintain that trend.”

She said the country would brand itself as a quality leisure destination that suited family holidays, while establishing new markets such as sports tourism.

So the Ministry of Tourism Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul says they will be focusing on "niche" markets. I think we have heard all this before. The highly imaginative Dream Team at TAT are forever thinking up visionary "niche" ideas for pulling in the tourists along with their money.

Just to refresh your memory and brighten your weekend here is a list of some of their better known "niche" market ideas.

       ·        Durian Kit Kat tourists

·        Pokemon Go tourists

·        Rusting naval base tourists

·        Jetski tourists hub

·        Sports tourists hub

·        Medical tourists hub

·        Jewellery tourists hub

·        Pattaya, good clean family fun tourists.

·        Target wealthy Chinese tourists who normally go to Japan

·        Target wealthy Japanese tourists who normally go to Taiwan

·        Promote 400B National Parks for tourists

·        Promote off-season tourism

·        Attract Chinese couples for marriage in Thailand

·        Hub of world film locations

·        Rainy season tourist programme

Here are some that have been successful:

Human trafficking tourism

Prostitution tourism

Road rage tourism

Tour bus thrill-ride tourism

Motorcycle carnage tourism

Gang mugging tourism

BIB extortion tourism

Tourist price gouging tourism

Taxi survival tourism

All these are niche markets where Thai have shown amazing aptitude and creativity.  Gotta love this place!

Just should cater for thrill seekers. Want the ultimate in risk ? drive on the roads, take a boat to Koh Larn or for the ultimate thrill, cross any Thai road at a pedestrian crossing with your eyes closed.

Yep Thailand the Cultural hub of safety exempt experiences. Yes folks could be  your last trip of a lifetime, literally.

You make your money by volume.  Thailand is not a niche destination like say Monaco.  It is more like a Disney theme park for which it has all lodging, entertainment and food for all budgets.  It would be advisable to just focus on tourism in general and let the Hi-So's figure out how to fill up their four / five star hotels.  They do not deserve government help.

You forgot: for single females take a trip to Koh Tao (Think should fit well into your category "Want the ultimate in risk" )

You could create a great theme park with all of those. I would add a farang favourite like bungee jumping from a tall building without a bungee chord, unnecessary surgery land and blind date with a group of Pattaya lovelies.

Just wait for it....

There'll be another announcement from TAT about headcount soon.

Mind you they will be quality heads - not just any old tat.

See what I did there eh?

its sad to see this country struggle to stay relavant..with slogans , new malls , theme parks, and silly elephant shows, all of which are empty..when all that's needed is a weeker bhat, a cleaner beach,no tour buses in the city ,and allow the Japanese kids to rent a scooter without getting hassled by the police...the world knows what Thailand has to offer...stop the spinning it, im getting dizzy

Hmmm. So since her nepotistic appointment, she has focussed on head count anf revenue. She's been wildly successful, with every report claiming huge increases in both. And she's been called a liar in many fora, including this one.

And now, she's been so successful that head count is no longer important - presumably because the inflated number have become ridiculous and her lies transparent. So. What's a go-ahead girl who happens to have a well-placed police officer as a husband, to do?

Sports tourism when Thais can't even measure a half-marathon accurately and is a laughing stock all round the runners world?

Just when you think they can't get any more stupid...
