The BIL thread seemed to ring true with so many. As well as that there was real support and empathy rather than ridicule and sniping. Although there were a couple of 'gate-crashers' they were quickly delt with.

Just to keep folks informed...you may recall that I mentioned an infection which was consuming what was left of my leg.

 

It turns out to be MRSA and it is a hell of a thing to treat necessitating huge amounts of bed rest..so naturally I turn to see what my friends are doing on TV..

 

Once that is cleared up then it is on to the heart..

 

The Aussies are doing okay..altho' I wished they smiled more...

 

THE BEER IS GOOD..lots of boutique breweries now and the wine's not bad either...

Anyway you are getting the care you need and very good to get updates from you and a chance for a little exchange in TV once again.

Wish you well and heart ops are much more routine then in yesteryear, so don't worry too much. It is still major surgery and you will need more bed rest.

A good opportunity for some reading.

Oh so pleased this thread has new messages. I didn’t actually add anything at the time - wasn’t sure a middle aged Farang woman would be able to add anything. But I have really felt for all of you who’ve had a bad time and many of your stories have really helped me to understand the Thai psyche. I’ve got a really lovely Thai son in law but sometimes it’s hard to understand what’s happening in the thought process and your experiences have helped enormously. My BIL finally got a car. A pick up truck which is about 15 years old. He crashed it into the gate whilst trying to park it in the front garden on the 2nd day.

 

He became somewhat less enthusiastic about the truck since.

 

He procured loans from his mom (30k) and raised 30k selling cassava. His wife and son were not accounted for so her monthly visit was a bit of a shouting match I'm told. No mention of insurance, licencing or tax since purchase 3 weeks ago!

I have been gone for 8 months now.

 

The stepson still hasn't got a job but he is only 25 so no rush,eh?

 

The stepdaughter has extended her farcical university course for another 2 years-making 6 in all.

 

The BiL continues to skive off his wife and daughter who sell some food at the local market.

 

Now..the good news.I have not wasted a single dollar,baht,shekel,drachma or any other form of currency on a Thai for 34 weeks! 

 

My Asians Anonymous program is clearly working..

I am currently watching something from two very different and distinctive perspectives being in this case, two unusual farang/Thai meltdowns. One girl is from the North, and the other girl is from the South. The differences are being the type of girls they are, but they both have something in common. 

 

Family, greed, and Thai Face.

 

One of the girls is university educated, and the other is a bar girl. Both have greedy families, and it is just self-destructing doom for the farangs involved. I am not going anywhere near them or getting involved, but the money wasted in both cases could have seen me retire here nicely forever.

 

Killing off the golden goose (death by a thousand satangs per time it seems) is at this moment, is purely laughable because neither of the girls can see that in the end, they are going to be left with nothing. They were just a tool for the families involved in getting others what they wanted. It seems to be the same thing most the time; tractors, housing, cars and better class of booze for the fathers and brothers and of course, gold.

 

Lord, how I have a sense of hate of gold now after living in this country.

 

However, I must say, I have not seen too much of this destruction since moving to a new village two years ago. Seems where I am, the people are pretty solid and sensible. Still, I have a decent BIL that works very hard but his girlfriend may be another matter. She has various deals going around, and he is paying for them all, and he will be the fall-guy if they go wrong. She has nothing to lose at all and only time can tell.

 

Hope everyone in this thread is well. This thread has helped a lot of people and I am happy to see life still breathed in it.

Thanks cobber-a good glass of decent wine cures many ills-or so I tell my doctors!

 

With luck,I am going to be heading off to the Hunter Valley in a fortnight for a decent meal,a pleasant cuddle,and a bottle (or two) of Bold Ned.

So my BIL has litrually got stage fright since he purchased this pick up. Does not even attempt to drive it 200 metres onto the farm. His dad's distraught as he agreed with his wife's constant nagging to let her lend him half the cash. Moms calling my Mrs telling her to pretend the cash was hers in an attempt to get him to just do some work. There's got to be 800 ripe mangos ready to be picked on their farm and no one's bothering. I'm tempted to get down there myself and pick them. Makes me sick to the stomach the thought of all those mangoes just rotting. The funniest thing that happened this week though was my Mrs sister telling the Mrs how their brother had began talking about needing a tractor!

He certainly appears to have developed 'work' fright.

 

Whilst there were many delightful things about Isaan-the amount of work fright amongst Thai males was truly amazing.

 

Unless one considers constant bludging as work-they certainly put a lot of time and effort into it.
