PATTAYA: -- A Swiss tourist and his Thai wife became the latest victims of a Pattaya snatch thief yesterday.

Erwin Sabech, 66, and his lady wife Praphaporn Kheunphim, 38, had just been out on their motorcycle feeding some stray dogs.

As they drove home past the At Mind Premier Suites Hotel in Central Pattaya around 2pm yesterday a thief in white shirt, jeans and full face helmet grabbed Praphaporn's bag.

The tug caused both victims to come off their bike and suffer road rash.

Praphaporn said that the bag contained two iPhones, a half baht weight gold ring (worth about 10,000 baht) and a further 10,000 baht in cash.

Police and medics were soon on the scene but the thief had got clean away.

However, Thai Rath reported that the police have a clear CCTV image of the incident and are hunting for the thief who is aged about 20 - 25.

Praphaporn said the couple had been out feeding some soi dogs and were on their way back when the thief struck.

Cautionary tale for those who say that having a heavy duty strap to hold onto your bag is a good idea.

Nothing I carry with me is worth getting pulled off a moving scooter for.  Or getting dragged down the road by a snatch thief on a scooter.

This could have been worse for the victims.  A lot worse.

It seems this sort of target robbery by thief or thieves using motor cycles / scooters is becoming very common. See a lot of reports in UK about this now too.

Everyone just has to be more careful; and at a time when many countries take measures to prevent their citizens protecting themselves.

Why would I confront a beefy guy and cause possible violence?  A forum is a place where one can express opinions.  Having had damage to my car; having had my step-daughter brought off her bike and knocked unconscious by dogs running wild, perhaps you will forgive me if I begrudge soi dogs every mouthful of food they scavenge.

Thieves on Bike, they always come as pair. I suppose Police and locals know them, but they don't dare to prosecute, because they are afraid of revenge.

They snatch chains from Russian Tourists. Hope Police check the camera around and arrest. Pattaya has become lucrative business place for Police.

Very few news coming to media. There are minute by minute crimes there.

I do not have up to date stats nor can I corroborate with empirical research...

But common belief, including mine, tends to consider Pattaya very unsafe for farangs...

MEMO to snatch and grab thieves.

Please specifically target soi dog feeding tourists, locals and self defined good samaritans.

It's easy pickens and will discourage this misguided dog feeding

Even at 66 Erwin looks as though he could look after himself. The lesson here: never have in a bag anything you can't afford to lose and 2nd, just give it up as easily as possible ( latter easier said than done when it's being wrenched out of your hands). The case of the Australian gran in Phuket should be remembered: she tried to hang on to her bag and was stabbed to death.

Which countries are taking measures to prevent their citizens protecting themselves?

What measures are they taking?

I only ask so I can avoid those places.

Thank you for you advice.

Feeding the soi dogs was a good thing you both were doing...You have good hearts!

Check out;    Thailand Temple Dogs & Cats  (on fb).

Not really, do better rounding them up and getting them neutered...

either it is or it is getting reported more, perhaps due to the increase in cctv cameras. The video makes it easier for people to be confident in reporting it because they think the cops can find the guy(s). and cops are more confident as well, so it gets reported as news.

the wife's auntie was on the bicycle at 6 am going to the market in soi about 1 km away from Rajaprasong, from the family house that has been there for 50 years. motorcycle with 2 guys were waiting and started the engine and raced at her and stole her necklace and tried to get the handbag but failed. The necklace was fake gold and worth nothing. It looked like fake gold too, so these guys prob were more opportunist than pros.

there certainly are loads of signs up in certain areas of Bkk that say "BEWARE OF BAG SNATCHING THIEVES IN THIS AREA"

I think it is wrong to feel stray dogs in someone else's neighborhood.

Dogs band together in packs, make a lot of noise and frequently attack children and people.

If you want to be kind to the dogs, adopt them and take them home.
