Non O to Non B Ed

Featured Replies

Hi TV members. Can anybody assist me regarding the best advice of the steps to moving from a Non O (Based on having a Thai Child) to a Non B Ed (I will begin my 3 year degree this year in Thailand).

I am a South African based in Bangkok. I'm currently on an extended Non O (single entry) which comes to an end on 22 July 2017. I would like to know if :

1. its possible to change from a Non O to Non B Ed at Chaeng Wattana or if i can I study on a Non O without having to change to a Non B Ed?

2. If non of the above is possible, which is the best possible place to go for a visa? What documents are needed and how much does it cost?

Thank you for all your assistance and suggestions.

You can study on a Non O or go to school on a tourist visa.

You cannot change non immigrant visa categories.

You do not have to have a non-ed (there is no non- b ed) visa to apply for an extension of stay based upon attending a school. The only requirement is that you have a non immigrant visa entry.

You will need paperwork supplied by the university to support an application for an extension based on education.

Or you could just renew the existing extension. You can study on any visa/extension.

You are still the parent of a thai child, you don't need to change visa. Non-O is the most versatile one. You may do any foreigner legal job or legal study.

Thank you for all the responses. It is greatly appreciated.

Okay I just want to confirm the following:
I can apply for an extension on my non o based on me studying (with supporting documents from my university and docs for my non o based on having a Thai Child). So in spite my extension coming to an end on 22 July (90+ 60) i can still go to immigration at Cheang Wattana and apply for a further extension without the need to apply for a new non o visa, correct?

Thank you again

You did not make this clear in your first post.

I do not know if immigration will allow an extension in your case.

Yes you can.

You will only need the supporting document from the university. No need to prove what your non-o visa was based upon.

No need to get another visa.

He has gotten a 60 day extension to visit his child of the 90 day entry from a non-o visa. No reason he cannot apply for the extension.

OK -- Thanks for the info. Certainly easy for the OP than having to leave the country.

Hi Ubonjoe. Besides my supporting document from my college confirming my registration towards my degree, what other documents should I take along to immigration. I will be going on Wednesday. Thank you for your advice.

The university should be aware of what is required.

You can find the requirements here on the immigration website click the Thai word on right side of the category of  extension. https://www.immigration.go.th/content/service_visa_extension_all

Hey Ubonjoe. At immigration now and the lady handling my extension said I can't extend my Non O based on studying. She insists that I can extend further by showing 400 000 baht or 40k a month income or apply for a student visa. However not for studying. Not too sure what to do here.

All that is needed is non immigrant visa. The rules only state that.

From immigration website to apply for attending a government school.

(1) Must have been granted a non-immigrant visa (NON-IM).

They seem to be saying you need to apply for an extension based upon marriage.

You can attend school with any visa or extension type.

There seems to be a mis-communication here.  You can get an extension of stay based on being the parent of a Thai child.  You can study while living here on that extension.  Proof of studying / university-attendance is not a pre-requisite nor helpful for obtaining an extension of stay based on being the parent of a Thai child.

Having those finances are a pre-requisite for obtaining a Non-O visa based on being the parent of a Thai child.

@ubonjoe I agree with your reading of the act, but think they are trying to separate apples (Non-ED) and oranges (Non-O).  Immigration allows people to change the "reason for extension" (qualifications) within a type - Example: Non-O can be switched from based on retirement, marriage, Thai child.  We see this all the time.

But, as Non-ED is a different Non-Imm type than Non-O - I would think Immigration would want to keep people using Non-ED "study at university" qualifications separate from those using Non-O qualifications, which are based on Finances + Family or Retirement.

OP:  If you are still at the Immigration Office - See if a different person handles ED extensions, and try to speak to that person about applying for an "extension based on studying at a university".  In theory, you should be able to apply for this because you are already in the country on a Non-Imm type visa.  They may never have done this, when the applicant was not starting the process with a "Non-ED Visa" in their passport.
