Tourist visa upgrade to 1 YEAR 'O' Marriage Visa/extension?

Featured Replies

 Hello,

I live in Thailand and I recently got married to a Thai citizen. That entire process is finished, we've got the certificate. My wife and I are currently visiting my home country, Canada, and I planned to get a single entry 'O' Marriage visa here and then extend it in Thailand. I already put 400,000B in a bank account before I left for 3 months. Unfortunately I forgot my marriage certificate, which is one of the requirements at the Canadian embassy. :annoyed:

If I get a single entry tourist visa in Canada, will I be able to upgrade it to the YEAR 'O" Marriage extension, while inside Thailand? Specifically in Chiang Mai. Is the process any different than if I had entered Thailand with a single entry 'O' Marriage visa from Canada?

 Thank you very much.

You will first have to apply for a conversion of the TV entry to a 90 day Non "O" entry. I do not know if this can be done in CM.

Does anybody here have access to the marriage certificate to scan it and email a copy to you.

Getting the single entry non-o visa before arriving would make it lots easier.

I think Chiang Mai  immigration can do a change of visa status to a 90 day non immigrant visa (category O) entry. Not sure how difficult it will be to do it there but they have reputation for giving people the runaround when applying for a visa.

It also is possible to obtain a SE "O" visa based on marriage from a Thai embassy/consulate in one of the nearby countries.

Unfortunately no access to the certificate. It's in storage. I have a picture of it, and I'm hoping a translator service in Thailand can make an English translation copy from the picture and email it to me. But even then I think the Canadian embassy will need a copy of the original Thai one.

I figure the hassle of upgrading a tourist visa within Thailand beats needing to go to Laos or another nearby country. I just hope I can do it in Chiang Mai.

I very much doubt a reputable service would undertake such a task unless they also made clear on the translation that they had not had sight of the original.

The embassy in Ottawa is not the only place you can apply for the non-o visa.

You may find that one of the honorary consulates would be more flexible and may accept a picture of it if it is a good shot of it.

They are the last 3 consulates on this webpage. http://www.thaiembassy.ca/en/visiting-thailand/visas/obtaining-visa-canada

Would a Thai-Consulate in Canada reject a Thai-version of the certificate?  They might even accept your picture of it - especially if go go with the wife (with her ID/Passport, matching the certificate).

But if they really want "a copy / scan" - your picture could possibly "be a copy" if edited properly.  Assuming it is not blurry or taken from a very obtuse angle, an image-editor can make corrections - crop it, make it greyscale (black and white), correct small amounts of skew (wider at top, bottom, or one side), and rotation.
