I don't have answers, but maybe here are the questions to be asked?

Which of the two will heat up more in summer?

Which of the two would be easier to clean, say with a karcher or similar?

Which of the two would be more slippery when it rains?

...and when you get the answers, be sure to share it here please...

How long - 7 meters or 70 meters? Most country places with long driveways have good sized crushed rock/dirt combo built up driveways usually leading up to a concrete pad, covered garage....

Are you on high ground or a low lying area....Flat?

That's what I'm thinking but we have concrete walkways around the house and the algie that grows is a pain in the ass in fact I'm off into town tomorrow to buy a jetwash to blast it all off. The car port is already there, it's not too big a space probably 300 square m.

In between to be honest no chance of flooding and just on a slight slope.

Let me save you some time here:

You are gonna make it in crushed stone because you are " the man of the house " " you wear the pants " and it's what you want. !!

So you will do it in crushed stone, then it starts :

1) I don't like it !

2) The stones are too big I can't walk on it properly !

3) The stones are too small, they get stuck in the scooter tyres !

4) When it hasn't rained for a couple of days its too dusty.

5) It's ruining the heels of my shoes !

6) Can't wash the dog crap off with the hosepipe, it goes everywhere !!

etc etc etc

So in a fit of rage you will rip half of the stones out and order the concrete, but because you are all miffed you will not water it and it'll be all cracked and ugly !!

Or you could just go with the concrete and save yourself a lot of stress and sleepless nights on the sofa !!

Marriage is all about compromise. You need to get the mix of crushed stone with concrete. Problem solved.

So does anyone have a crushed stone driveway? Will it just eventually sink away into the ground? All advice much appreciated, just days away from the final decision.

We did crushed stone leading up the slight slope then Concrete to car port and house. Even though it was only a slight slope heavy rain managed to move the stone i was constantly having to re grade the top layer of stone it removed down the slope.

Took it out in march and had it concreted with reinforcing wire embeded best move ive made. With tons of crushed stone to make some lovley border low maintenance flower beds

Yes we do. It fits nicely into our "informal" garden (ok jungle) with its rustic, grass up the middle, look.

Maintenance consists of bunging a load of fresh rocks down every few years on the bits that have sunk.

I admit to zero preparation when it was laid. Dump the rocks, barrow and rake them level (ish), drive the truck up and down a few times, get a beer. Repeat after a few months, eventually it goes rock hard and stops sinking.

Not looking its best in this photo but it's cheap and if you have an informal garden just fine.

I did my drive at the farm with crushed stone, only way to go IMHO

It will settle/pack down as you drive on it and the rain compacts it, just order a couple more loads and spread it

After a couple of times of doing this it will form a great surface, breaks up the run off from the rain rather than turning it into a torrent as the runoff from concrete does.

Also much cheaper and isn't as big a heat absorber like a big slab is

Doing mine soon, top portion will be concrete base and pavers for the cars but the lower 3/4's will be stoned. Mainly due to allowing rain to disperse through the rock and the cost as it's a pretty big area. Not a big fan of large concreted areas as I don't find it very nice looking, though it would depend on the type of house and surroundings

Andrew, in looking at your pics I'm interested in your front wall.  Did you use precast concrete panels?  Either way, tell me about the fence and the cost.  I have about 400 meters of fence to figure out.

Marc that's kannot's wall, there's a thread going where he explains everything. I don't know how to link a thread up but think the thread is building a perimeter fence.

As a concrete driveway will need some form of aggregate base. Go with crushed stone initially and they if no one likes it go concrete.

Your wife wants concrete because some other woman has it!

Geo Textile is worth consideration if you wish to prevent weeds coming through crushed stone. Geo Textile is readily available and is standard 3 meters wide in a roll 100 meters long. Some sellers will sell it by the square meter, other sellers only by the full roll in Isaan.

I had it for 3  years but it was always temporary until all the other work was done.

My land is mainly stone anyway underneath so no sinking but depends on your subsoil etc.

The stone is CHEAP ,concrete aint.

The stone will move around where wheels go over it regularly and if your  not gentle on the clutch you can get wheelspin, I have a  motorbike also and had to be really careful on it.

Ive  found it may stop some weeds under the textile but grass seeds would still sprout in the gravel between gravel and textile...............although I guess easy to pull out anyway.
