Do I need assistance when importing a dog

Featured Replies

I will be importing a small dog into Thailand at the end of August and have a question in regards to landing in Bangkok and getting the dog through the airport. I have all of the information about what paperwork is required and the process of obtaining an import permit.  Should I have someone in Thailand handle submitting the paperwork for the import permit. I am able to have the dog travel in cabin with me and didn't know if it would be easier to have someone meet me at the airport to assist me if any issues occur. I don't even know if there is a company that provides this service. Just trying to cover all of my bases. Hope my question make sense. Thanks in advance.

I would strongly advise you to employ the services of a local- a solicitor perhaps?  As you say, just to smooth over any potential unexpected issues.  You could try contacting soi dog for advice.

one base you need to COVER is,the danger's here, there are many you need to look out for to keep you loved one safe.

good luck.

Absolute not neccessary.

When you have all paperwork in order (Import permit!!) Just go to the quarantaine desk. Let them do some more paperwork and pay 100 Baht. Then proceed to customs, and pay 1.000 Baht import duty, and you are done.

Arjen.

I brought two dogs into Thailand (edit - using a UK company to arrange the travel/licences etc.) and as I didn't speak any Thai, employed a Thai to deal with the paperwork etc. when they arrived.

Perhaps it wasn't necessary - but it certainly made me more comfortable and less worried about my dogs being left in their crates (and extremely stressed) for any longer than absolutely necessary.

I am wondering how this works out practical? The dog must be collected and the "odd luggage" place. The quarantaine station is also there located. This is a restricted area.  Is someone who assists you allowed to enter this place?

Arjen.

My dogs arrived at Phuket airport.

When I arrived they were outside (non-restricted area IIRC), and the translator and I went indoors to the office to sort out paperwork/money etc.

Thanks for explanation Dick D,

So you did not fly yourself with your dogs? I heard that when you not bring your dog yourself it is (much?) more complicated.

I arrived approx. 1 month before my dogs, giving me time to find a suitable house to rent.

It was a long time ago (11 years), so I can only remember how we went about organising their import/the situation and emotions/plus a few of the immigration 'generalities' 'when they arrived - which I was 'led' through (sign here/pay here) by the translator I'd employed.

Having used UK 'experts' to advise us on the veterinary requirements and supporting documentary proof - and then arrange their flights etc., plus a translator at this end to sort out paperwork etc. - it was all very easy, albeit obviously expensive one way and another!
