By The Nation

KALASIN: -- A soldier helping police man a Kalasin road checkpoint was shot and wounded late Tuesday afternoon before two alleged drug couriers were arrested.

Police said Sgt Jiraphan Thongphubal was shot three times by a motorcycle pillion rider at the checkpoint in the village of Ban Por Daeng in Yang Talad district’s Tambon Na Dee.

They said Jiraphan and the officers signalled for the approaching motorcycle to stop, but the pillion rider opened fire.

The two men on the bike tried to flee but were arrested.

Police say they were carrying a 9mm pistol and 142 methamphetamine pills.

The driver was identified as Anucha Puangphila, 24. The alleged gunman is 17 and cannot by law be identified.

I sure hope the soldier survives and recovers fully.  Poor guy.

Perhaps the 17 yo can spend a few weeks in remand in an army prison till they find and complete his paperwork.   (no reason to hurry)
