Which is best a UV or RO drinking water filter system?

Hi all I am in the market for a drinking water system. The type I am looking for is the type that the filters are fitted below the sink and an extra tap is added to the sink. The ones I have looked at are a 5 stage system with either a Ultra Violet C stage or a Reverse Osmosis stage. The prices are similar so it really comes down to which is best and the ongoing maintenance costs.

If you have experience either or both of these systems please could you let me know the positives and negatives of each.

Pure H2O is never unsuitable for drinking considering your body is 70% water. Even the most heavily laden mineral water from a melting glacier in the Pyrenees contains a miniscule amount of electrolytes such as sodium and potassium compared with food. Seriously, do you drink salty water? No. But just sprinkle a tiny bit of salt on your breakfast and that will be all you need. Potassium? Eat a banana. The amount of potassium in one banana will be more than what is contained in a container load of mineral water. How about calcium? Milk, eggs. The list of foods is endless.

The main consideration in a third world country is clean uncontaminated water. Give me the purest I can get with some ice. I'll get my minerals from food without even having to think about it. The bottled water companies are very good at marketing healthy water. What a laugh.

Also consider that about 40% of the water from an RO system is waste as well, might be an issue if you are either paying off the meter for your water or have an unreliable well

Just how much can you drink to affect your water bill? I just picked up this statistic from Google. The average daily water consumption is 340 litres per person in a household, for washing, showering, toilet etc. My daily consumption is about that. How much can you drink in a day. 3 litres? If an RO filter dumps less than half of that it isn't going to have any impact. You would use more water just washing your hands.

That is a great call, have just done some more research and the waste can be up to 4 times the actual drinking water. That makes a difference to me, not in monitory terms, in the terms of waste is bad.

Argen and trd, thanks very much for your comments. It is food for thought, pardon the pun.

The Thai RO systems are not really RO. They have no waste water disposal. A normal RO system uses up to 4 gallons to purify 1 gallon. That means that you will lose 75 percent of your water. A Thai factory where I worked eventually had to order a huge Culligan RO system from the US to get the quality of cooling water they needed.

If you have an RO system that has one line in and one line out, where does the rejected water go? That system is simply bogus. You have been cheated.

The rejected water goes down the drain. I have a pipe from the RO connected to the sink drain under the counter. What you describe is not RO. The Thai RO systems are RO.

We have had an Amway for many years ... you could plumb it in out of sight ... we seem to get through a lot of drinking water but a 'filter unit cartridge' lasts over a year. We decant water to one of those big bottle upside down 'things' which can cool the water.

Many of the filter systems I see produce 'softened' water and I'm not convinced that is exactly good for your health ....

Oh, I agreBh you, we had one of those models several years ago too and they're really nice, cheap and good for drinking water  However they aren't good for long using, ours broke only after several years and I'm not sure that the one which you make with your own hands will be better :passifier:
At the current time we prefer durable ones like in this list on Cozzy, we installed such Kabter one and it seems better in its quality

And yeah, it's truth that UV ones aren't very good for really pure water, they leave much unhealthy waste in the process of filtrating...:saai:
