Thai Rath reported on a theft carried out by confidence tricksters at a market in Bang Bua Thong on Thursday.

The victim was 25 year old Parichat Ekaphong who is a maid.

She said that she had been conned by three well dressed women aged about 35 - 40.

Initially the first woman came up to her to allege that Parichat had stolen her bag and given it to another woman.

A second well dressed woman arrived on the scene to say she saw it all.

Parichat was confused and denied everything saying she had been minding her own business.

But the second woman was adamant and said she would hold Parichat while the first woman went to get the market authorities.

As the first woman left the second woman pointed to another woman shopping nearby who she said had received the bag that contained gold.

The third woman admitted receiving the bag. The victim was led away and told that in order to prove her innocence she should take off her 20,000 baht gold necklace, amulet and two rings.

Confused she did this and handed them over.

She was given a bag and told it contained five baht weight in gold - worth about 100,000 baht.

In the confusion a car arrived and the two women got in and disappeared.

Parichat checked in the bag and it contained just some coconut water and a pair of socks. She had lost valuables worth about 40,000 baht.

That is Parichat pointing at the bag in our picture.

She reported the matter to police who are investigating.

Thai Rath called it a new kind of theft preying on the gullible.

Sounds like a variation of the dropped gold necklace scam where the victim sees someone pick up a gold necklace from the street and agrees to buy it off them for a fraction of its worth. When the victim takes it to a gold shop to get it valued it's found to be fake and worthless. Victims are usually too embarrassed to go to the police.

In this case it's a handbag full of gold. The details about being forced to take off her jewellery to 'prove her innocence' may just be to try to save face.
