But I will be returning  to the UK for at least six months  for medical reasons on the 3rd of August 2017

Could you help with what I need to do for the best;

do I need exit/ entry permission etc ;

should I renew retirement extension before I leave

or should I let this one  extension lapse and apply for another  non O Visa in the UK when I actually know that dates I will be returning to Thailand??

I am uncertain at this time whether I will in fact be able to return within six months, it all depends on how well the medical issues go.

Just for info;

I am 73 years old and married to my Thai lady, well settled in Thailand and very happy, just a bit confused about all the rules etc and the best way to do this.

Thank you for your help

Would be best to get a new extension in the 45 or 30 days early that is allowed and obtain a re-entry permit at the same time.  That way you are free to return anytime before Aug 17, 2018 and can then extend again normally.

This should also protect you in the unlikely event the retirement extension rules were to change during your absence.  Cost is minimal.

You should attempt to renew your extension now and then buy a re-entry permit.

If you are not in Thailand during August your current extension of stay will lapse and you will have start again with a new "O" visa.

It would certainly make it easier in the long run to apply for the new extension before you leave and then get a single re-entry permit.

It  would save you having to deal with getting a new non-o visa.
