DETROIT (Reuters) - A federal judge in Michigan on Monday halted the deportation of more than 1,400 Iraqi nationals from the United States, the latest legal victory for the Iraqi nationals facing deportation in a closely watched case.

U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith granted a preliminary injunction requested by lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union, who argued the immigrants would face persecution in Iraq because they are considered ethnic and religious minorities there.

Goldsmith said the injunction provides detainees time to challenge their removal in federal courts. He said many of them faced "a feverish search for legal assistance" after their deportation orders were unexpectedly resurrected by the U.S. government after several years.

Goldsmith said the extra time assures "that those who might be subjected to grave harm and possible death are not cast out of this country before having their day in court," Goldsmith wrote in his 34-page opinion and order.

    Quite the mess huh.

They consider themselves ethnic and religious minority in Iraq. That's what they are every where so what is the difference?

I like the part about resurrecting after several years. How long does it take to get some one out of America?

Iraqi Christians have been migrating to the US for around 100 years. If you're unaware, Iraqi Christians have undergone repression and murder in Iraq. The current deportation orders are being opposed by an elected Iraqi Christian heritage US politician, among others. Do you agree / disagree with his & others POV that Iraqi Christians face severe treatment / lack of protection if forcible returned to Iraq which equates to unreasonable additional punishment.

None of it is America's problem so why bother just send them back no matter what the history is. They are who they are.  No one else is responsible send them back.  Not a problem America should be concerned about. The environment we are born into is not our chosing or others problems simple as that

US does have ownership, it is contrary to law to forcible return people to a country if known they realistically will face human rights violations. However, unfortunately many to the right of centre don't respect human rights law.

And that is why the USA is so divided today.  One side you have people with compassion and on the other side you have the "screw them as long as I am alright" brigade also known as Trumpsters!

Yes because it turned up that they all had the required US$ 20'000,- in cash, accident insurance and their METV US Visas were in order!!!!:clap2:

More seriously, and sorry to displease some, but who created the mess in Iraq to start with?.....So if there are any refugees to be handled, it would seem more appropriate for them to go to the USA and not to any other country ....sorry guys, no offence please...

Overall, the US has been generous in resettling people from countries where it has had military involvement.    It's one of the unforeseen consequences of military conflicts and one of the hidden costs.

Hopefully, before any military adventures in the future, the people in charge will take a very close look at the likely consequences with regard to the number of potential refugees and displaced people.

Seems to me that if they send them back, they just need to quickly convert to Islam, and they will be fine. All this religious hoopla has gone way too far. It is tearing apart whole societies, like the nice comfortable western ones, that are being over run by illegal immigrants

using religious persecution as an excuse to flee their S***hole countries.

Anyone with half a brain that get's caught up in this  scam of the last 20 centuries, faced with changing to the other side, or having their heads lopped off, should find it quite easy to make the right decision.     Yes sir, please pass me the  Koran, I have a lot of reading to do.

It's all a big scam, billions of people praying, bowing down & even killing each other, all for some imaginary beings in the sky, that have never been seen or heard from before. Sounds like a plot for a real bad B movie, but there are so many weak minds in the human population

that they seem to believe anything some bible thumping con man stuffs down their throats.

    Rant Finished.

Much of the conflict in the world is caused by religion and always has been.  Christianity has done as much damage as any of the others but they all have the same message..."Ours is the only true religion and everyone should believe what we believe and live by our rules".  It is a form of brainwashing that almost the whole world signs up for one way or another.  It is a stick for controlling the masses and does tremendous harm but still we buy into it.

Quite a rant.   On one hand you condemn the belief in religion and on the other you suggest that these people change their religion.

It would be interesting to see what happened if you gave that little rant in some countries, like Saudi Arabia.
