CHIANG MAI: -- Adding to the already flourishing cafe scene in Chiang Mai, a new destination with nearly 200 Lego sets for guests to play with, recently opened in the northern city.

Because one does not simply grow out of Legos, Blockland Lego is a new space for Chiang Mai adults and children to spend time building the Lego masterpieces of their dreams. At a cost of THB140 per hour, the cafe provides pricy lego sets including those from the Marvel superheroes and Star Wars’ Death Star collections. Each of those sets is comprised of over 4,000 pieces and retails at USD500 (more than THB16,000).

Taewon Park, the South Korean expat who owns Blockland Lego, said he decided to open the business in Chiang Mai following the popularity of Lego cafes in his country. He was also inspired by his nieces and nephew, who always ask him to buy a new set of Legos after only playing with the last set a few times.

It is regrettable - seriously - when you see, what those department stores and toys stores have to charge for Lego. A tiny box can clock up hundreds of Baht and hence is affordable for the selected few only.

Lego is, arguably, one of the best toys ever invented and made of a quality second to none. My grandson today is playing with Lego his father and uncle already played with 30+ years ago. I got a whole suitcase full of simple building blocks during a business trip to Germany - for a fraction of what they were costing here. Today the price gap is even worse, for absolutely unknown reasons, as all those copy products are cheap crap compared to the real thing.

Legos can be put into a pillow case and thrown into the washing machine. Ensure that the water is not heated, use very little detergent and don't spin the cycle at the end. Take 'em out and dry them on a big towel on a table. They look as new and last, literally, for a lifetime.

The simple building blocks allow children to let their phantasy go into overdrive and they are busy for hours with a seriously good toy. Thanks to the Danish inventors and I hope for the generations to come that this toy will stay around.

More reasonable finance ministers and department store operators might realize one day, that this could be a professional mass product to inspire and develop children. Well, most likely not - how sad!
