BANGKOK: -- Ahead of the upcoming election, former Prime Minister and Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva on Wednesday launched an official Line account where people can become his “friends”.

“From tomorrow, my friends can talk to me at Line account @mark_abhisit,” Abhisit said in a short introductory video clip.

The freshly-opened chat room does not yet contain news and updates but some can be expected today, when Abhisit will celebrate his 53rd birthday.

The official Line account, which allows users to enjoy one-on-one conversations, has been widely used for commercial purposes, although Abhisit appears to be the first Thai politician to make use of it.

Politicians have been administratively inactive since the 2014 coup, which means they have to do more to keep themselves in the limelight.

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are among popular channels used by politicians.

Abhisit's Facebook page got as many as 2.3 million “likes” with recent updates on his trips to heavily-flooded Sakon Nakhon.

That’s almost three times less than Yingluck Shinawatra from the rival Pheu Thai Party. The ex-PM, who is due to hear her court verdict later this month, got six million “likes”.

Her brother, ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra, also outnumbered Abhisit, with 2.5 million “likes” on his page.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has no official online account. The retired general enjoys traditional communications, such as televised programme every week.

Pathetic excuse. Lack the b....s to face the reality that he is hopelessly unpopular.

Sure, because it's one way so he can dictate better. Wonder what that makes him, ... I didn't say it!

He is trying a little.  Don't see him making a big splash anytime soon.  Yingluck is grace under fire right now.

Yes, the spokes person for Thailand 4.0 prefers 1960's technology, and the occasional screaming at the top of his lungs and the stomping of his feet to communicate.

Ahbisit is even less popular than someone who is not even physically here. That's real embarrassment.

We all know you do not actually need to show up to beat poor Mr. Ahbisit.

Not sure even what to think about him.  He comes off as a decent fellow who will speak out occasionally against the junta iron fist, but he just does not resonate.  Many in Isan seem to dislike him.

The traditional Article 44 that lets him say and do whatever and wherever he decides.

I suggest if you haven't figured it out, try asking  "worgeordie".

I am quite sure what to think about him. He had the Mr Clean, handsome, well-bred, well-spoken, democratic and intellectual image and he chose to squander all of that by doing a squalid backroom deal in an army barracks to get the Premiership.A poisoned cup.  When he could have chosen the high ground, he went low or was simply taken there because his lack of spine made him easy to drag. Politically dead, in my view, and as long as they keep propping up his corpse in front of the voters, so are the democrats. A bit sad really

If Abhisit had said after the deal in the army barracks that gave him the premiership that the nation was in turmoil  and clearly needed to sort things out by a new election he would have stood  a good chance of winning. Instead, he chose to reap the sad rewards of being a puppet and said after 2010, "unfortunately, some people died".

I think "worgeordie" may be incommunicado for a while. I suspect he may be crawling around my garden, face blacked up and a commando dagger between his teeth - a wholly understandable reaction to me suggesting that Abhisits black and white football shirt was anything to do with Sunderland.

I understand that Newcastle and Sunderland are rarely on speaking terms.

Mind you that's probably true of the rest of the English - us effete southern softies can't understand a word they say anyway..

I just spoke via Skype to a friend who is a megga magpies fan one of the top boys and he said "tell him to get that shirt off he never did anything for Newcastle and we do not want him to"

I think that says what they think over there does it not.

hopelessly  unpopular with people like you? He has class, something most politicians don't have.
