BANGKOK: -- A dam safety specialist of Kasetsart University has urged authorities concerned to accelerate draining of water out of reservoirs in Sakon Nakhon, to build additional weirs to block water from entering reservoirs and to map up contingency plans to cope with damaged dams.

Associate Professor Sutthisak Sornlump who conducted an inspection of dams and reservoirs in Sakon Nakhon said that several dams were awash with water to their full capacities such as Nam Pung and Nam Oon which have capacities to hold 165 and 520 million cubic meter of water respectively.

He said irrigation officials have not drained water out of the two dams for fear that the released water mass will swamp farmland and communities.

Aaaaah, what does he know?

Sacrifice a goat to calm the river- goddess or have 1.000 boats propel the water down the Chaophraya!

Who needs a "plan" and "experts"!

The mighty headhoncho said, there will be no flood!

New year- same old s41t!

Now we need 'water experts' to tell us when the reservoirs are full ?

Was the expert undergoing maxillary surgery prior to the annual deluge? That would explain his delayed warning.

I'm sure what he recommends would be good for the dams. But for those living downstream, or at his proposed weir sites? They have needs too.

I thought PM Prayut the  world's greatest expert on dams, irrigation and solutions to flooding had only just recently visited the flooded areas to give his expert advice and sweep up a few leaves.

Why do we need another so called expert? .........and just who does he think he is trying to steal the PM's claim to fame.

Based on the experience accumulated over the years in implementing flood mitigation works, DID is today more conscious of the need to carry out such projects on a river basin basis rather than on a piecemeal approach.  This kind of approach will involve a shift from the traditional thinking in terms of controlling flooding through expensive engineering structures to the more comprehensive approach of viewing the solution in terms of managing flooding by incorporating structural as well as non-structural measures. http://bem.org.my/publication/juneaug04/F(Flood)(38-43).pdf

Malaysia has had similar problems. But are ahead of Thailand, that continue in a piecemeal approach. Suggest the General go and see the Malaysian Big Boss to look at sharing ideas.
