I am traveling to Bangkok in September on a 30-day visa exempt, and wondered what is the earliest I can renew it for another 30 days at CW immigration?

You should be able to apply for a 30 day extension about 2 weeks early at CW.

CW would probably do it anytime after you've arrived, but to avoid a wasted journey you should follow UJ's advice and apply within the last two weeks.

 

Why not get a tourists visa? That would give you 60 days and avoid the need for an extension.
