SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea will develop a plan by mid-August to launch four intermediate range missiles at the U.S. territory of Guam before presenting it to leader Kim Jong Un who will make a decision on whether to proceed, the North's state media said on Thursday.

The unusually detailed report on the attack plan marked a further escalation in tensions between Pyongyang and Washington after U.S. President Donald Trump warned North Korea earlier this week it would face "fire and fury" if it threatened the United States.

North Korea's official news agency KCNA described Trump's threat as a "load of nonsense".

"Sound dialogue is not possible with such a guy bereft of reason and only absolute force can work on him," it said of Trump, adding that it will keep closely watching the speech and behaviour of the United States.

The North Korean army is developing a plan "in order to interdict the enemy forces on major military bases on Guam and to signal a crucial warning to the United States," the KCNA report said. Guam is home to about 163,000 people and a U.S. military base that includes a submarine squadron, an airbase and a Coast Guard group.

"The Hwasong-12 rockets to be launched by the KPA (Korean People's Army) will cross the sky above Shimane, Hiroshima and Koichi Prefectures of Japan," the report said, citing General Kim Rak Gyom, commander of the Strategic Force of the KPA.

"They will fly 3,356.7 km (2,085.8 miles) for 1,065 seconds and hit the waters 30 to 40 km away from Guam."

Tensions surged this week after Trump's warning to the isolated state to give up its nuclear weapons and missile programmes.

North Korea carried out two nuclear bomb tests last year and two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July. Trump has said he will not allow Pyongyang to develop a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the United States.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis also issued a stark warning to North Korea on Wednesday, telling Pyongyang it should stop any actions that would lead to the "end of its regime and the destruction of its people."

As stated in another thread:

A nuked NK is not an option.

Time is running out

Now Trump has to deal with what his predecessors messed up.

Kim may be a psycho, but he is not suicidal and will understand only too well the consequences of going through with it. This is sabre rattling to piss the Donald off, who has been stupid enough to get involved in a war of empty threats.

Who knows.  He may be suicidal?  Saddam was in the same shape.  Didn't he declare the "mother of all battles".  Then was found in a ditch.  I'd call that suicidal! LOL

A memorable line out of a movie: if you want to shoot, shoot, don't talk...

or broadcast your plans for attacks.....

How can you know he is not suicidal?

Does his behavior exclude this? Or even make it seem unlikely?

And if he is - that's really dangerous! Then he will not care to commit suicide like a giant suicide bomber together with his people and as much of his "enemies" as he can.

It might be wise not to exclude this possibility.

(he's afraid of his own shadow...sounds like Trump :)

"You never know how the North Koreans are going react ... especially Kim Jong Un who's afraid of his own shadow, who is concerned about him being toppled, regime change," said Richardson, adding he was encouraged that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson tamped down Trump's rhetoric.

Apparently the N. Koreans realized that Trump is a narcissistic egomaniac and now they play him like a fiddle.. :violin:

Absolutely.   Kim dangles the bait and  Trump bites instantly.  Shame the idiots who voted him in do not have much understanding as how this goon is making the US a laughing stock and can be baited by nearly anyone.  Mind you his eyesight must be near perfect with all the carrots he bites.

He is killing himself fast enough by eating a whole wheel of swiss cheese a day.

I'm confused; this sounds more like a shot across the bows with unarmed ballistic missles than a nuclear strike.

NOW HE HAS WARNED EVERYBODY, of his intent....... The US needs to be ready to shoot them out of the sky as the come over 'international waters' before they even get close to passing over Japan..............

So we need to rely on Kim's knowing when to stop baiting Donald, and on Donald not losing it too early. Can't rightly say who's more stupid, but pretty sure both got cozy hideaways if the worst happens.

Shooting ballistic missiles out of the sky is easier said than done, even under optimal conditions. Say the US attempts to intercept and misses, what was gained? Say, for argument's sake, we're talking non-conventional warhead, what happens if it gets hit? Not so simple.

They should put in a call to the Starship Enterprise. Because anti-ballistic missile systems are nearly as unreal as that vehicle.

More a case of who-knew-intercepting-ballistic-missiles-could-be-complicated.

Nobody but Trump

Are you kidding? Look at most of the responses on these threads. They are falling for all this overhyped rhetoric hook, line and sinker.

Doubt that's factually correct. Then again, it seems that you consider anything not fully in line with your views as "overhyped rhetoric".

What's the Great One going to do on being presented with Guam? Frame it? Still, nothing like giving notice of intent.
