Hi there,

I am currently in Bangkok on a METV. Im within my first 60 day stamp. I entered the kingdom on 30th June. My expiry for the first stamp shows as ' valid until 28th august '.

I am intending on trying to seek employment here eventually . In the meantime I would like to extend my current entry stamp by 30 days from the embassy as it should work out cheaper then going on a border vacation.

My question is, I currently live with my partner in her apartment. So I am NOT currently renting. I heard mention that I may need to be registered in my place of living in order to extend my visa by the 30 days. I went to speak to the management at the condo here - and they said because I am not technically renting - I do not need to be registered. if I turn up to the embassy seeking a 30 day extension if this likely to be refused on the basis of not being registered as living anywhere. And if I DO need to be registered - what should I tell the management at the condo here? and do I have enough time before the 28th August?

Thank you so much for any advice in advance,.

You will apply for the 30 day extension at the immigration office (not an embassy) for where you are living.

What you will need depends upon where you are living since it varies from one office to another. Where are you located?

Some offices will want a TM30 form submitted.

You have plenty of time to apply for the extension.

Ubonjoe, thank you kindly for your reply. I am in the ON NUT area of Bangkok. My apologies for the confusion, it will be the immigration office sorry - showing my lack of experience there ?.

Good to know I have plenty of time. The condo office said they will enquire as to the situation, however, they aren't always quick to act. Is it likely i will need to register being in the on nut area ? - I'm assuming when I eventually gain employment and change visa types etc I will need to be registered anyway so might as well sort it now ?

You will not need it at Chaeng Wattana immigration when you apply for your extension. They do not ask for it.

Map and other info about getting there is here. http://bangkok.immigration.go.th/en/location1.html

This is probably an incorrect assumption, especially as a border hop gives you 60 days rather than 30 days. However, the extension is simpler for someone who has not done a border run before.

Thank you for your reply. My plan was to get the additional 30 days and hope that within that timeframe I can find employment. Now this is most likely not to happen, so I would do a border hop after this 30 day extension. The 30 days is merely to give me some more time before I attempt a more difficult border hop and give myself time for more research.

Use your extensionmoney for planetickets to some neighbourcountry and have a nice day or two there and come back. No need for "special research" to do that..

Border hops are not difficult - especially since you have an METV.  Just make sure you always have 20K Baht worth of cash or travelers checks on you when you re-enter Thailand, and don't use the Poipet/Aranyaprathet border-crossing.

Also, I would not mention "looking for work," if asked what you will be doing here by an Immigration Officer - though it is not against the law to do it - provided you don't actually "do any work" until after you have a proper visa and work-permit.

Thank you for your advice Jack :).
